Fleet battles

Attack multiple ships?

I was just wondering if it was possible to make ships attack multiple ships at one time in a fleet battle depending on how many guns'beam turrets/missiles you have on it. It would make battles much more quick paced IMHO.

Thanks.

Not at this time, I suggest turning up the speed

That wouldn't be such a bad idea though. Multiple weapon platforms shuld be able to engage multiple ship types.

One thing I've noticed about fleet battles, and maybe this is because I am still back at 1.0x, but it seems that the ships float around aimlessly rather than appear to engage each other in true combat. They seem to bounce up and down once the battle is finished also. Just my impression. Am I the only one who feels this way?

No your right, It would be the best if they were actually flying around engaging each other.

Thank you for the replies.

I agree, they do look a little like fish, rather than actually engaging each other. Hopefully in the future the AI for the ships (or whatever controls them in fleet battles) will be improved so that they attack each other full-on broadside.

I also hope that eventually, it will become possible to make multiple weapons = attacks on multiple sips, with the exception of tiny and heavy fighters (they should only be able to attack one target.)

One last question: can I make a poll of this?

Thanks.

I know this has been talked about many times, but I cannot resist bringing it up again when given this kind of opportunity.

I believe the overall best improvement for fleet battles is to make them 'real time', turn-based 'tactical', or some other form in which the player totally controls his own ships during combat. I do not like the way the computer fights for me. I would like to be able to decide which of my ships attacks which enemy ship, which of mine try to run away, which of mine stands and watches, etc., etc. I would like total control of my ships during fleet battles instead of helplessly watching them as is now the case.

I agree with you partially.

I don't particularly caare for the way that I have no control over which ships attack which. However, I don't really mind the way it fights the battles for me.

What I would like to see is this: ]As the battle begins, the game pauses. A screen with all of your ships in the battle comes up. You select one ship, aan entire class of ships (i.e. all the dreadnoughts), or all of a single ship size (i.e. all the larges). Once selected, you give the ship('s) it's/their orders. For example, you tell all of your heavy and giant ships to attack the enemies Battleships, while all of your tiny fighters attack the enemies tiny fighters, and your medium size ships attack any enemies within range. Then you simply click the play button, and it plays out for you. And the ships attack multiple ships at once.

That's what I'd like to see, although that's just me.

Why would I want to engage multiple vessels at once?

If I concentrate all firepower on one ship, I will take it out sooner, reducing the enemy's firepower. If I split my shots between several targets, it will take longer, and they will do more damage to me.

I would like more control too, namely the option of choosing which weapons\defences to use against enemy ships with certain amount of ammunition and having an initiative value for ships to have an order of attack. So if it is your turn, if an enemy ship is next and is going to attack your ship, you will have the option to either attack with the weapon(s) chosen or activate your chosen defense(s) depending on the experience of your crew. This is just a general idea off course but can be more detailed but it has to be turn based combat and not real time.

I really like Holivers general idea for combat. Real Time combat would be a little too much.. this is a Strategy game, not nesecarily a tactical one. Having said that however, giving general orders to your fleet and letting the rest go cinematically(that particular camera setting I think is not so good btw), wouldn't violate that broad game view. Additionally it could certainly be an optional component that could be turned off in the options screen, so as not to bog down those who don't want to use the feature.

serptico, they have added a first strike I think it is in this latest Beta, at least I seem to remember them talking about it in those terms. I think it is based on weapon type.. which would very much simulate having an Initiative. I think the idea of turn based combat would be intriguing, and add to the tactical value of weapon location and perhaps a 3 dimension battle map? But it may still be too micro- managgement for a game of this scale... perhaps if it was optional?

Cheers!

@ Anglewyrm

I understand what you mean, but what i'm saying is this: turrets on a battleship are controlled by people. People do not always aim at the same thing, especially when being swarmed by a squadron of fighters. Sure, when a Battleships is fighting another battleship, they quite often shoot at each other and ignore the other tagrets. But what if it's 1 Battleship V. 20 Snipers which have very little armor and can hardly withstand the battleships firepower, but that outnumber the battleship which has no prtection from the lasers of the snipers? then the batleship would want to attack multiple enemies.

@ MysticArcane

That's a good idea! It would be better as an optional component so that people who just liked to sit back and watch the battles play themselves out wouldnt complain.

While I agree with you whole-heartedly, I regret to inform you that this is probably a dead horse. Frogboy has pretty much nixed the idea of tactical combat ever happening. It saddens me as the only thing MoO has over GalCiv is tactical combat.

Wait a min......I just got an idea from holiver. lets follow what holiver said:

This to my opinion is a really good idea. But what would be a little bit neater is that on that battle/tacticle/stratigatic viewer is that when you select your orders for your ships attack It will show the AIs response to that attack, then you pick what orders your ship will do for the next "round" (A round is when your ships attack, then the enimies ships attack. when your ships attack again that will be the second round.) and the AI will show you its response like the last round. Once at the end of your orders for the battle you'll have the outcome of the battle aleady. and then you press play and the combat viewer will do all the orders you previosly ordered. so in example, the battle that you ordered will be played in front of you.

Yet another good idea!

I hadn't thought of that, but now that you mention it, it makes good sense. And perhaps it could be optional, so that people who didn't wanna have to give their ships orders and just wanted to sit back and watch the battle wouldn't complain.

Yep, it's another tactical thread...
