newbie needing help

I am having trouble with the ship part of the game. I thought there was some standard ships with the game. I have found the basic ones you start with like the constuctor and defender but no offensive big bad boy ships. I am able to create them but my first time through I just wanted to use the canned ships. Is there something I am missing or is there a point after the first couple of ships that there are no more canned fleet ships?
Thank you for any help on this.

keep resarching weapons tech and by all means design your ships after you have the tech. The standard ships suck.

I do have many of the weapons techs up to level three. should I be seeing additional ships in my list. I am planning by the way to make my own but the first time through I would really rather use the canned ones.

If you want to use the "canned ones", just keep researching along the weapons tech and they will appear sooner or later.

Lots of the canned ships have sensors/defences/life support and engines on them. You probably are lagging behind in one or more of these areas... but really the canned ships are very poor. The AI designs its own, you will eventually need to.

When you research a weapon or other ship equipment, the research screen will show you which ships this new tech enables and what other techs are required for them.

Here's a link to a download from the Library section. It's a list of ships and their requirements. You can look it over, and see just which techs are needed to unlock the various ships.

I created something similar to this, but in in excel format. Seeing as how I've never uploaded mine to anywhere though, this should work for you, just as well. Hope it helps.

well, its a pity they made the defenses as it is.

why not one type of shield and armor.....but multiple weapon types.

Research

Hull Sizes, Defense Techs, Weapon Techs, Life Support, Engines, Sensors.

That will open up a lot of the premade ships..... The library also has an Ecel sheet that someone made (link is somewhere in this thread).

Good Luck.... Designed ships are better though.

I'm still uncertain what life support does on a ship as engines give the range.

No they don't... What makes you think that?

Engines give you speed (more move points per turn); Life support lets you range further from your planets and starbases.

Thanks guys for all of your thoughts. I really am planning on working on my own ships but couldnt figure out why I wasnt getting any new canned ships. I must be spreading my techs a little too much as I have teched a lot of things.
Thanks Eidolonsfury that is exactly what I was looking for.
