Build a single ship?

Am I missing something or doing somethin gincorrectly? If I build a ship, it seems to keep building new ones. I click on a colony ship, go through a few turns, my ship gets done, but then when I check the queue another one is already being built. Is this supposed to happen? I realize that wanting mulitple colony ships is probably desirable, but I didn't expect the game to keep chugging them out on their own...

You can switch that setting through the menu. I forget what the option is actually called, but it was pretty obvious that it did that when I saw it.

I really don't know why you wouldn't want to anyhow. You should always be building something, otherwise you'll fall behind. If you don't want anything in particular, just pump out some constructors since there always seems to be a starbase in need of an upgrade.

Yes exactly. Also the micromanagement would get annoying if you want to repeat build.

How do you stop the building?

Wiz,

Just go to the Build ship screen and choose "Nothing"
It is in the core ship list...
I agree with No118, I always build constuct ships if I am not sure what i need next...
You can just switch to another ship if you change your mind with no lost prod.
I only switched a Starport to "nothing" once, to complete a social project...

How do you stop the building?

1) Go to 'Options' menu either from the main menu or by pressing 'ESC' ingame.

2) Look under 'Game options'

3) Untick 'Build same ship until cancelled'.

Job done.

Would be good if you could set a default ship to build and then set it to build say 5 fighters when fighters are finnished then revert to default building, Say colony ships.

I always monitor the colony list and change my build orders from there.

I agree with MD. Build queues would be fantastic. Every strategy game I've played has them, except GalCiv 2. Would be really nifty for planning. Of course, you could have an "infinite build" option at the end of the queue, so that if the last ship in the queue is a colony ship, it'll just keep building those.

Also, if you turn off automatic ship building, you should get a prompt that asks you what you want to build next, like Civ 4.

Well, what I would like is the ability to halt production on one ship and start production on another without losing the production time on the first.

I build my warships until they have 1 week to complete, then halt production until war is declared on me. It saves me from having to maintain a fleet of ships in the meantime. But if I want to build a constructor in the meantime I lose the production time of the warship.

I need the ability to 'set aside' one in the shipyard and build a second next to it, if you know what I mean.
