What do trade goods do?

I see a bunch of trade goods that I can research such as Aphrodesiacs, diplomatic translators etc. These are quite expensive to research. What go do they do?

They provide some effects and you can trade them to other races.
Example: You research dimplomatic translators, this gives you (iirc) +20 diplomacy. in addition to this you are the only one allowed to build them. You can then say "hey altarians, do you want to have them, too?" if they want the +20 diplomacy, they have to trade it from YOU, only YOU.
Imagine them like a kind of tech only you can trade to others and others cannot research.

once you trade them, do you lose the effect?

No, you always have the effect. anyone who buys it of you will have the effect too.

by the way, what does iirc mean? i see it often and cant figure it out - im sure its something blindingly obvious

I was wondering that myself. I make them but never give them away for fear of losing the effect. Do you actually keep it?

Yes, you'll keep the effect and can share it with as many races as you want.

But you can't take it back, so be wise about whom you give those goods.

Also when you've shared your trade goods with other races, they can't give it further, so no fear of other races then the ones you've given them to receiving it.

Hi!
what does iirc mean?

IIRC it should be If I Recall Correctly.
