Torian Bastiches!

Hey all!

Been playing a little bit now, but my first post here...

Anyway, in the game I'm now saved in progress, I got a fairly good start on a Gigantic map ( I just like Gigantic maps, it makes the game feel more 'epic' to me, blah blah blah). I do start right next to the Korx, who seem to always instantly start making plans to go to war with me WHENEVER I play. I kid you not, every single time, I spend the whole early game at war with those guys.

So I'm slowly beating the Korxies back, blowing up their ships left and right, building military bases, etc, and begin my planet-hopping expedition to their 'core' systems. Meanwhile, the Torians are all buddy buddy with me, even sending me 'some of their finest starships to aid my effort against the Korx', etc. I find a nice Torian planet a good ways off, and start running trade routes, with the idea of keeping this 'strongest military' power on friendly terms until I can balance the playing field a bit. Well, stupid me, the Korx are almost beaten, I lay off a few turns to get another wave of troop transports in position and move up my newly update Cruiser class ships, when, BAM! Never mind the warm relations or all the trade, the treacherous Torians declare war on me. I hustle everything I have to their border, but no avail....I'm quickly steamrollered by the perfidous bugs (or whatever they are).

Ah well, long boring post, just thought I'd share my experience at ankle-grabbing with y'all. (I play on Tough, if that matters.)

what difficulty were you playing on, perhaps its that your ships were to close to their planets (i hope they alter that action, i mean maybe after a set time, but not when you're just passing through)

Woah, is this the Dave Hodge who's a dean at CVCC? Small world if so...

Also, I have a vendetta against the Torians. Whenever I encounter them, they're the first to go. Well, unless the Altarians show up first.

they need to create real territorial borders within the influence borders... the open border policy drives me nuts......

I know what you mean. Every time someone sets up a colony on Mars I want to glass it so nobody can live on it.

Dave, did you happen to move any of your transports near a Torian system or starbase? The AI factions are hair-trigger sensitive to the proximity of your troop transports. Sometimes, all it takes is moving a transport past some isolated, far-flung influence starbase to set off the AI. If you got the "We know what you're doing..." message from the Torians, that is why.

I think the Torians are supposed to be amphibian ...oids? ...ish? I was going to say xenamphibians, but that sounds like a stimulant. Whatever they are, Annoying is probably the best description. I've played one game as the Drengin so far, and I have to admit that on some deep level, in that game it was satisfying to take apart the Torians a little at a time, interspersing their inevitable destruction with conquering the Altarians and Iconians.

The same thing happened to me! I took 4 Yor planets and my previously friendly neighbours the Torians suddenly decided I would be better off under their rule.

1. I play on Tough. That's plenty hard enough for me.

2. I didn't see a message. But our two 'spaces' were kind of intermingled, since he and I were grabbing for the same area.

3. I don't know THAT Davehodge, but I like his name.

Anyway, not griping, I just thought it was interesting. I always hated to Korxies the most, due to reasons stated in my OP, but they have company on my manure list now.
