CariElf, please "kill" auto-select as it's killing me

Dear CariElf,

you did a great job making auto-focus an option and my psychotherapist loves you for that. I also love you and your crew, the UI, AI and performance enchancements in 1.2beta009 are great and with the new combat system, tough is really tough now for me.

But you have to know, I won't mary you before you kill this anoying auto-select. It's good to have the main map stay where I want to have my focus at, but by selecting random (?) ships all around the galaxy I often move the wrong fleet and my psychotherapist hates you therefore.

So I pray to Stardock, even since I know it would mean a lot of work:

- make auto-select an option as you did with auto-focus

- add another shortkey to select ships on autopilot like Tab does with ships still to move

Best regards and Amen

puntarenas: Have you looked at the options in the interface section on 1.12. There is a tick box that affects behaviour, I don't know if ticking it or unticking it gives you the way you would like it to work, but it may be worth a try.

I would alsolike auto select to die

i concur. i hate the autofocus with a passion, but the autoselect without autofocus is just horrific as well.

I agree. Auto-focus was never a big problem for me (although sometimes... ), but the current option doesn't solve the underlying problem. Auto-select without auto-focus could even make things worse for some people, depending on their playstyle.

I hate autofocus. I regularly move the wrong fleet, and then it switches off to the next ship, so I have to search amongst allmy fleets to discover which one is headed off in the wrong direction. To handle movement and minimize this, I now wait until my ship has completed its movement, hit the FIND button which centers me on the next ship, move it, hit find, etc.

The auto feature makes me use more keystrokes to avoid it, which means it is not working.

Love the game in general, just had to chime in on this point. 1.3 or sooner, please.

Is auto-focus the new option whose description is "String not found"? I thought it was gone from the latest version, and I really missed it. I'm glad to know it was just hiding.

Yes, I have more problems with auto-select than I did with auto focus. I am continuously moving the wrong ship.

I wonder if disabling this would break the find feature? If so I suppose it will be a problem I will have to learn to live with.

It would be wonderful if auto select would die now, adn Carielf did say it was a bit harder to implement though.

Ideally it would be a check box on the options menu as well.

But I find that by left clicking on all ships in view in a zoomed out strategic map, that mostly solves teh problem for me. The only problem have is that sometimes I miss the ship, don't notice I haven't selected it because the blue halo is too small and I move the auto selected ship to my intended destination for the ship I thought I was moving. If it wasn't critical, i let it go, if its nasty, I may even load the game, as I consider it an UI error. (the only thing I try to reload for)

I would like to see a way I can display all autopilot moves on the main map, not just on the minimap. so I can see if the error was forgivable or not.

The auto focus thing was killing me though.

I agree, it's a feature I've wanted for a while. Shouldn't be too hard to implement either, which is good

Pretty Pretty Please

Link

I had a discussion here (above link) on how I moved ships. And how I wanted an autopilot button.

I've turned the option back to the way it was. It caused more trouble than the old way. It's annoying to have the camera jerked around at random, but at least that lets me know it's selected the wrong ship and which one it is.

This is the one thing I really miss from GalCiv 1. It was the space bar in that game.

It's called AUTOFOCUS. And it blows.
