Anyone notice the Arceans have poor social skills?

One day, they are living next door and the next they say "The universe would be better without you?" and all. Were they, as a race, poorly toilet trained? Does their race have more bullies per capita than the other races? Is thier any French in their lineage? I'd rather pick up a Drengin hitchhiker than live next to one of those Arceans. They need to get with the program and learn to give peace a chance. Word.

All races have poor social skills. As soon as there military rating is 2-3 times yrs they all become big bullies. No difference if they r good, neutral or evil, its a slightly annoying part of the game. Good races should really be more inclined to achieve victory via peaceful means, ie cultural, tech or diplomatic. Well evil through good old military conquest. Neutral free to follow any path.

In this game, size matters. In this case, it is the size of your military.

Regardless of your alignment, races will introduce themselves friendly, submissive or aggressive depending on your clout. I also have the impression your military strength is in many cases the deciding factor on whether they'll go to war except for a few cases such as good guys charging off at you because you're 'too evil'. (I wouldn't have been evil if I just got that pony I always wanted, but noo-oo.)

I think the issue is that the AI is trying to win and the most obvious way to win is to blast everyone else out of space. When they're looking for someone to pick on, they could reasonably look for someone who's closeby and significantly weaker.

Yeah, the Arceans are jerks. I think they're stuck up from being such an ancient (and phyically large) race. I wouldn't rather pick up a Drengin hitch-hiker though personally because I'd always be worried it would try to kill me, eat me, or kill and eat me. Also, *ouch* for the French.

All races have poor social skills.

I have to disagree with that. The Iconians are generally level headed and they really know how to grovel. Even if they are hostile with you, their messages are tame to polite, unlike that snooty Netro Mancer who starts insulting you below neutral. Sure they can become a bully if you aren't friends with them and they are more powerful than you, but that's life in the big galaxy. "Good" races won't always get along just because they don't like to exploit other beings. No, I'm not trying to start another good / evil thread, I'm sick of them too. Good races do 'try' to get along since you get a free diplomacy +, but if you don't try to become their friends, they really don't know what to think of you. If they see cultural pressure and looming military fleets near their space and they have a right to be suspicious. Open trade, sharing technology, helping them out when they are in need, that will earn their trust even if you are weak and evil. Makes sense to me.

The AI supposedly has a random aggression factor each game too, so just because you've been attacked by every race at least once, they aren't all like that in a single game. It keeps you on your toes, makes them less predictable and I think its more exciting that way. It's a little more like first contact every time! ^ ^

Okay, so the player does have to do most of the work, offer the olive branch first, but I don't mind that, afterall if everything happened without you having to work at it, what point would there be in playing? Besides, once they are your friends, they are loyal and true, honoring their alliances every time, unlike me who is usually just using allies to keep everyone from ganging up on me because they fear my tendancy to conquer others...

the truth is : galciv 2 races are somehow alike our current nations
even "good" nations will conquer those that are too weak ... history is full of that kind of stories...

if you are good & they are good, there is an increased chance that they won't try to crush you but if you have a military that is really too weak, they will find the need to protect your people from you....

that makes sense

Actually, the Arceans do call you "cheese eating surrender monkeys" if you happen to be in a war and make a peace treaty. So I think if anything they're either American or English, since it's those two that actually use that phrase currently.

yeah, damn Arceans, they won't be calling me a cheese eating surrender monkey again, just to be ironic i crushed them, and refused their peace treaties, thing is is it seems every game the Arceans are the most powerful of the AI, in almost every department.
