Tech victory rumours

What's the deal?

I have been through the forums looking for an answer to this and all I can find are nonanswers. Can the AI win with a tech victory? I am interested because there is an AI in my current game currently researching Technological Victory. They're 59 weeks away so I can still do something about it if I target their research planets, but I need to start that now IF they can win through tech victory.

I'd preferably like to hear from people who have lost via tech victory.

I have never lost due to a tech victory. But, why not just wait and see what happens?
It's only a game, after all.

no the AI does not seem to go for tech victories, it seems to be disabled for the AI... there were a number of post earlier about this, but the galciv forum is so devilishly hard to comprehend that it's almost impossible to find old posts if you don't have a link!

the consensus of those posts was basically that the AI doesn't go for tech vics. I've never had it happen either, and some have seen that tthe AI researched tech. vic. but the players didn't get a defeat screen!

At least in 1.1 it didn't. I remember a screenie someone posted where the AI had researched the path anyway (DURRR), and that player won by getting tech victory as the random espionage tech grab

In GalCiv I another civ getting tech victory only meant that you could not win by getting to tech victory. I bet that carried over.

The AI definitely can't win by tech victory. I've had two races research tech victory in one of my games, but I didn't lose... perhaps Noumenon72 is right.

Save game, and go ahead and see if you can lose via tech victory.. Just to see if they can....

then reload and crush them.

No, they can't, nor can they win by alliance victory. In fact, AI civs are not really allowed to win the game at all. The best they can do is prevent the player civ from winning by taking all his planets.

Vanir,

Just a thought, in order to win an alliance victory, they have to build an alliance with you in it. Hence, you also win.

Of course, anyone can have the military victory

As for the tech victory, I think I remember in GCI, there was a box for the AI to win a tech victory.
But I could well be wrong about that...

re: alliance "victory"

in my game the AI terrans are "Close" with everybody, but they dont "ally" in order to "win". my custom race is allied to 2 races (including the terrans), neutral to one, "close" to the other two.

i purposefully try not to win by alliance. (actually i did, but then reloaded to see what would happen...)

would this be evidence that the AI does not "try" to win by alliance? or is my method flawed?

Perhaps that would be the case if it worked, but if an AI civ is allied with every other civ in the game, the game does not end like it would if it was the player's civ.
