So this is definately worth the money...........??

Looking for my next RTS or TBS

Just wondering how anyone would rate this game (for gameplay) compared to Civilization 4 or other strategy games..... Rebellion, Galactic Empire (star wars stuff). I have read a lot of the threads and it seems at though everyone has only good things to say overall (except for a weak AI?). Please note a few of the things in GC that you like much better.... or less than any other strategy games...... thankz

Oh yeah.

Everyone has good things to say because it's good. Very good. The AI is actually VERY good, but not quite passing the Turing test yet... some people are never satisfied.

I like Galactic Civilizations because the developers 'get it'. They are turn based strategy gamers that understand what you want in a strategy game. There is a great balance between engaging complexity and management that rarely devolves into micromanagement.

But don't trust our advice.

Download the demo. You can only play humans, and you don't get as many enemies, but most of the things that make the game great can be found in the demo.

Heh.

Once you try the demo you will be buying the game.

This has the strongest AI out there. Just there are 2 issues about AI bugs, like the non start bug.

And yes, it's worth the money. Go download the demo and be amazed, then times it by 11. 14 with the new modding features coming soon.

I was just surfin' around today and noticed that CNET made GalCiv2 one of their top five must have PC games... they're normally pretty much well on..

... oh yeah, and I frickin' love this game!!

id say its worth the money, its a great game overall, however it lets some down because it has no mulitplayer, but the metaverse is fun because you can compete with the other players to see where you are, the AI i find to be great, at the higher levels, well it wipes the floor with me. i love the ship designer, ive spent hours and hours building ships, one time i stayed in the designer for 3 hours and never played the game. its a graet game with lots of dev support and the patches have fixed lots of the initial problems, i highly recommend it. plus the forum is a great place to meet new people, like check out the hijack crew at Link

its the giant 1600 comment post, we're lots of fun and if you need any help with the game we'd be glad to answer any questions, you can also find us on IRC at #thegamingvault and this group all came oout of nowhere, we all just like the game. personally its one of my new favorite startegy games

Any good you ask. Well, Civ 4 etc maybe good but do they come with 'design your own kickass starships'?! Nope, buy it, you know it makes sense!

For any person who enjoys 4x games, GC2 is a must have. That said, with all the press about the AI, I find it average. Stardock is still tweaking it and hope to have a better version in the next release 1.2. In my opinion, after beating the game on the highest level after owning the game for a few weeks and reading the comments here, Stardock hasn't and will not deliver any holy grail as far as AI. Again, that's my opinion.

Don't get me wrong, the AI is about as good as other 4x games, maybe a tad better with an occasional flash of mimicking intelligence. Overall, the AI is competent, and does a few smart things. There are times the AIs make really stupid decisions, and for the most part it is predictable, at times boring. Most 4x gamers who have mastered one or more of the older 4x games at their highest levels, will beat GC2 too, even at the toughest settings. 4x newbies will find it an interesting challenge, frustrating at times, but a tip or two and some experimentation and they too will tame the AI, though it will take some time to reach the highest levels.

That said, this is THE hot 4x game, so buy it and jump in the pool.

Yeah, and the "just one more turn" mojo that the game has.

The competitiveness of the AI at higher levels, at least they put up a fight, is also nice.

And the fact that the developers have taken the time to correct bugs and improve the game after the release is good good goodie good.

This game is a must have.

Here is pure strategy, tactics, management, diplomacy, political, economy, society. All the features that make a strategy game of that kind, good are there.

It's really superior to civ4. Civ4 is nothing more than a graphical remix of the first civ. It still an incomplete game, civilizations are missing, units are missing, etc. It suck. hehe

GalCiv2 own all the games in this genre.

I've paid 70$ canadian for a pre-sale edition of civ4, I played 6 hours then I closed the box and uninstalled the game. I'm now trying to sell it on ebay but no one want that.

Gal Civ2 CE cost me 40$ canadian, shipping include, for a "like new" used copy, and everything now work greats. (had to contact the seller to ask it to change the email registration, and he was cool so he did it!)

Buy it new, and buy the CE, the manual is really nice and the extra jewel are nice.

If I had to buy it again, I would be a new copy of CE nothing more

I cannot wait for 1.2, and cannot wait for an expansion, that will just kick ass !!!!!!!!!

As I have said before in a couple posts, when I heard about this game and also read some of the reviews, I figured it would be a cool game to try out but they didnt have a demo yet and none of my friends in the area had it. So I pirated it and played a couple games of it.

Bout an hour after I got it and got totally plastered by the AI I went out and bought it. Been tellin all my friends to go get it if they want a great game that will last.

It's fantastic. Definitely worth buying if you like 4x games at all, or just get the demo if you don't like 4x games, because you might like this one.

The highlight is the AI. While the AI in some other games is more challenging, that is because it cheats. In Galciv 2, the AI doesn't know where you are, doesn't get free money except on the highest difficulty settings and usually only falls for tricks that work on actual people. An AI that just got loads of free units and an accelerated research rate would be more challenging, but what's the fun in that? The AI in Galciv2 is the best non-cheating AI I've ever seen, which is saying a lot.

Dollar for dollar, the best value in gaming definitely has to be Hearts of Iron:Doomsday, which is about 2/3 the price of GalCiv2. Doomsday also has an incredible AI, and truly deep diplomatic and economic play with a relatively simple interface. But Doomsday is crashy as all get-out, whereas GalCiv2 has benefitted from a steady stream of mostly welcome quality patches.

Civ4 is truly a staggeringly beautiful game. It also benefits from an active mod community and has had good patching -- I'm looking forward to the expansion pack!

Star Wars is easily the most beautiful game. Not terribly adept with strategy or game balance, but great for a Star Wars fix.

But if people are going to stop playing GalCiv2 (or even posting to this forum), it's because they're into Elder Scrolls:Oblivion. Would I ever hate to have to have a video game I produced go against that one on the store shelves right now! I don't like RPG's at all, and I truly loathe elves of any kind, but boy howdy, Oblivion is one supremely addictive game. I really wanted to start a "kill all of the elves" variant of Oblivion, but I'm so taken up with all the other quests, so that this idea is just going to have to wait a spell (pun!).

Maww dont hesitate - I go to work in 4 hours - its 4am local and just finished a session .... just one more turn .....dominating the known Universe .....

The AI is in fact one of the stronger ones around. Is the game perfect - of course not - but then what is ... however there is little doubt the devs strive to make it as close to perfect as Market reality and economics of game development allow - you cant get better or ask for more than that.

Everyones remarks above says it all, the only thing I would stress is the phenominal level of contact Stardock keep with its User base on the Forum. Its unbelieveable, I am a convert of 6 months "from another Civilisation", and I still get surprised by the level of support and dedication given by the Stardock Devs both on Forums and via email support.

The latter is The Major Differentiator with any other Games Software House I've ever dealt with, and a very important area for any gamer - its a real bummer to shell out $40-50 then in all reality get dumped as they move to the next Project - that does not happen with Stardock. At the moment its the reverse, updates and patches are pouring out so fast I'm wondering if they have ever heard of the word sleep, let alone get some ......

They actually reply to support emails .... not only that, you actually get useful replys and not canned spam .... *stagger*

Run, dont walk, and get it

Regards
Zy

I think you will find the game well worth the money. I am not completely happy with every aspect of the game but to expect it to be perfect is senseless. To me, it is a value issue. Will I get enough fun time to justify the $40 cost. I can honestly say that I have not doubt of that assuming you are a 4X game lover. For too long I have looked for a replacement for my all time favorite MOO2. It looks like I have found it. Thats probably the best indication I can give you on how good the game is.

Thankyou all for the encouragement! I downloaded the demo and played it 5 times through the 100 turn limit last night lol..... looks like i get to be $40 poorer this afternoon lol. thanks for the comments and the comparisions, I happen to share the disapointment with the gameplay on a lot of those u listed. Looking forward GALCIV2 and the the re-playability I have heard so much about
