Galactic Civilizations II v1.2 Betas targeting this week...

And the features are...

We're nearly done with Galactic Civilizations II v1.2.  The new version of the game is free for everyone who has purchased the game already.

We are also pleased to report that our sales last week at retail were actually higher than the week before which is likely due to the release of 1.1 and 1.11.  Thank you for supporting the game!

Anyway, the features in v1.2 are:

  1. Modding UI. Players will be able to select distinct UIs. This is the main thing we're still working on -- an example mod that has some meat.
  2. Updated UI. There are a ton of minor but important UI improvements as suggested by players.
  3. New battle system.  Ships fire at the same time in battle.
  4. AI Improvements. Lots of tweaks that we think will make the game more fun, especially for veteran players.
  5. Memory usage/performance improvements. Lots of DirectX-techno stuff that as a non-DirectX guy I can't explain but memory use is noticeably less and performance on lower end systems should be significantly even better thanks to new techniques.

Our goal is to have this out this week in Beta form so people can play it over Memorial Day weekend.

More incrimental "refinements" to the interface. Evidently this game wasnt ready to release when it was. By all means, continue developing the godamn interface...people are much more interested in that then say...new playable content.

Um, well, IMO improvements to the UI are the single most important element at this point in time.

I think the first strike should have SOME bonus.

Well, if the AI is unable to use it ....

Exactly...
In my oppinion being able to chose to attack, for example, weaker of 2 AI fleets in you range in advantege. No need for some combat advantage.

It's not available yet. You'll be able to get it from Stardock Central once they release it.

No bug fixes? I can name about a dozen gameplay bugs that have existed since day one that still have not been addressed.

Ok so I have 1.11 official installed. Can anybody point out, where in the pictures is the "AI uses more CPU cycles option" ?

I assume it should be in the "game options" box but...

I deleted my prefs.ini file and when the game created it again as default the mysterious "cpu option" disappeared from prefs.ini too. There was such option in prefs.ini right after I updated to 1.11. Something is clearly wrong here

Does anyone listen to my reccommendation of being able to bomb a planet watch it on the screen and fly away instead of taking a planet?

@dan

Your recomendation has been brought up many times and everytime Frogboy has said it would bee too hard to implement. Ok not hard to implement, but would be almost impossible to balance. Those are almost his exact words as I recall it.

The button seems not to be implemented yet. But if there is an option in prefs.ini has anyone tried a game with setting it to 1 ?

@feanor

I was just going to try it, but decided to delete prefs.ini before that. A mistake now that I think about it Still no 1.2B around, hopefully this mystery option sees the day light then.

What seems strange to me, is that Frogboy has in many occasions said that the option is there, just that it wont make a difference. Still many 1.11 people like me don´t even see the option

Sorry if this has been asked since I am new to this great game. Has anyone considered fixing the UI when looking at your planet screen or ship screen to sort the names alphabetically. When playing a gigantic screen I have found it difficult to find a specific planet and I don't seem to see anyway to sort this screen.

Or god forbid you come out of your little realm of denial concerning real Multiplayer.

It sure looks to me like the little realm of denial is 1/3 full of people like you. The facts are against you on this one. Two thirds of the people did not want multiplayer. I am most definitely one of them.

Ok gotta apologize a bit. The CPU intensive algorithms optio does show up in prefs.ini but only after you have choosed a race or made a custom race. My bad there for not testing more carefully

But still there is no clear button for it in the galaxy creation screens, I can only find this in prefs.ini. Can somebody confirm that they have this option available? If so, I really should consider reinstalling the game.

Hmmm ... The game really moves faster, loads quicker and all that. Even seems compatable with old saves.
One thing, though, with the new background, I can't see a thing but a mass of colors. The game is unplayable this way. Back to 1.11.

In no way is this a negative post. I really enjoy the game and the support is unreal. Plus, if I really was upset I would drive the 30 miles to Plymouth and talk about it .

It's coming along nicely.

Take care.

hywminstrel: Hmm...We really didnt change anything with the background of the main map (if that's what you're talking about). Check your settings and make sure the num of nebula are at a reasonable level (if it's at max, it's probably unplayable like you say).

As for anyone complaining about bugs that weren't fixed, or features that were left out (yes, we didn't include Multiplayer in a free update, go figure), realize that there is a finite amount of time to spend and, while we try to address the large issues, some items may get overlooked.

We hope that the UI changes make the game easier to manage, and the fixes in the map display improve the framerate, and the mod support help people to tweak the game to their liking, but know that complaining just for the sake of complaining (I'm looking at you, bingjack) will not help your cause

But thanks for the kind words from everyone else...your support makes it easier to push ourselves a bit harder to make the game as good as possbile

Mhhh...I am truely disapointed by this anouncement. Well better performance is great and UI Tweaks might be nice. You can discuss if the new combat system makes more sense, but what I really miss is....content. I really hoped that you guys would add diplomatic options or another ship function (we had so many in the diplomatic forum). But not one of the suggestions has found their way to your To-Do-list...

I is really a pity since I have been waiting for an upgrade on treaties and diplomtic options since the release - and a lot of those friends I forced to buy the game too...

Could you, Frogboy, give a short info if you intend to do something on the diplomatic level, e.g. more treaties, envoys, delegations etc.?

That is not the kind of thing we would do in a free updates. These are updates, not expansion packs.

What we are looking to do is listen to players and make tweaks and refinements to the game that make it better.

More treaties, expanded diplomacy, advanced espionage, those are things that are planned for the expansion pack.

Indeed. People insisting that the game lacking some pet feature or whatever constitutes a "bug" that needs "fixing" is not persuasive. Not having multiplayer is not a bug. And I suspect many players have some game behavior they don't like or don't agree with but that too doesn't make it a "bug".

We do these updates because we love the game and want to suppor the community.

If someone looks at the change log: https://www.galciv2.com/Journals.aspx?AID=118793 I think they'll find that we've been busy. And virtually none of it is "bug fixing".

Stardock has managed to squander any goodwill it had from the release of this game, by being totally and consistently out of touch with what people really want to see expanded. Remeber, word of mouth can work both ways, and the word has started to turn decidely against SD for failing to expand or develop anything of significance to the game post-release. Nothing to make anyone who had enjoyed the game for a reasonable amount of time after release pick it up again.

And by all means, spend development time and charge people for a ship part expansion when the community will produce all manner of content along those lines for free.

No, I wont pay you for a token ship part pack. Im also not interested in playing the newest moderately revised version of your damn interface or the biggest waste of bandwidth next to these wretched message boards...the "metaverse". I will however, donate a few bucks for SD to buy themselves a clue.

In case youre wondering, this is the reaction you get when you let people believe you make development decisions based on meaningless web polls, when really, you just dont want to do something and because youre not capable.

v1.1

It works both ways, Bingjack. If the gaming community, in general, were to conclude that the multiple award winning 1.0 was somehow "not done" and that what we've done since then constituted "failing to expand or develop anything of significance to the game post-release" then I just wouldn't do any more games and would stick to developing software for a customer base that appreciates what we do.

However, I do not think it likely that even a significant minority of players share your view. Games don't exist in a vacuum. One can compare Galactic Civilizations II to other games that were released at the same time -- often at a significantly higher price point -- and see what has changed in them since and make their own conclusions.

As a gamer, I think/hope that I share similar expectations as my fellow gamers and like to think that Galactic Civilizations II's updates have met or exceeded those expectations.

When Gal Civ 2 came out I was working a ton of hours and never really got a chance to dive into it. I really started playing a lot 2 weeks ago and it's a great game. I'm looking forward to trying 1.2 (Downloading it as we speak).

As for people saying it's unfinished, that's insane. Not only is the game finished, it's highly polished!
Really, Frogboy, I'm NOT complaining. The game is great and you all are doing a terrific job. 1.2 is a beta and I expect a few things to pop up ... isn't that the reason for beta?

I'm sure not going to stop playing the game. It's way too addictive .

The graphic thing is minor compared to the other work you guys are doing. I've never seen this much support delivered so quickly for any other game. EA should take a clue.

So, pat yourselves on the back for delivering a great product. You deserve all the accolades there are in the game industry.

hywminstrel: Hehe Don't worry, Frogboy wasn't talking to you, just the haters that can take something that we love to do (making updates with significant UI tweaks and feature additions) and make us question if it's worth spending our time on

Luckilly enough people seem pleased, so we know we're on the right track.

As for your bug, which you're more than welcome to complain about it sounds like some people are getting the large-sun issue again. When you go into the game, can you zoom out all the way and see if it, in fact, a huge sun that has taken over the entire sector.

Thanks man!

Can we use DesktopX to make our own UIs with 1.2 beta 2? Or is that a 1.2 full addition?
