The Second Drengin-Terran War -- History continued

the calm before the storm

This is the next chapter of what's becoming my favorite way to pass time @ work. Enjoy (if you like this sort of thing...if not, I don't suppose you'll enjoy it...).

Oh, for those that haven't read the first bit (a.k.a. the vast majority of you), here's a link to the original post: Link

Lieutenant Adrianna Hyksos stared blankly at her monitor. The elegant dance of Jupiter’s many moons as they circled the giant gaseous planet made for a spectacular scene. A spectacular scene that Hyksos had seen over and over for the past 2 weeks. With a sigh, she brought up another beautiful image: this time the rings of Saturn were diffracting the Sun’s rays into gorgeous patterns of oranges and yellows. Patterns which the lieutenant found all too familiar. Disgusted, she punched the control panel, and a much different picture appeared. “Finally,” she muttered to herself. The lieutenant had tapped into an optical sensor scope that she hadn’t seen before, a scope embedded on the surface of one of the larger rocks in the Asteroid Belt. The frame seemed to pitch wildly, as the rock spun through space and collided with its smaller cousins. “Not much to see, but at least there’s some variety,” she thought to herself, and then, aloud, “Come on, gotta wake up Adrianna.” Hyksos willed herself to sit up; she had been slumped over her desk for what seemed like hours. Groggily, she glanced at the chronometer: 0238 hours, PST… way too early to message her mother in San Francisco. And Lieutenant Mason didn’t take over and start his watch for another six and a half hours. The communications relay station was silent – Hyksos couldn’t even hear Mason’s snoring through the closed hatch. She allowed her eyes to close, and let her mind wander…

Without warning the lieutenant’s peaceful musings were interrupted by the deafening blare of the alert klaxon. “Damn, damn, frackin’ thing!,” she yelled, as she struggled to mute the offending siren. Just as she cut the sound, the hatch screeched open, and Donald Mason stumbled in. “What?... What’s?... What the hell is going on?” “Shut up, Donny, I don’t know yet,” Hyksos snapped. She accessed the communiqué that had set off the alarm, and began to read it aloud for Mason’s benefit:

“From TSS Bellicose to all Terran Starfleet vessels and installations…”

Hyksos stopped reciting. Mason impatiently gestured for her to continue, but all she could do was input the voice playback command. The speakers crackled to life:

“…licose to any Terran Starfleet vessel. Mayday, mayday, mayday. Drengin invasion fleet has breached [static] border at coordinates 56 [static] dash 178. TSS Valiant destroyed. TSS Dauntless destroyed. TSS Resolute heavily damaged. TSS Hephaestus destroyed. TSS Hermes [static] heavy casualties. Repeat: this is a general distress call from the TSS Bellicose to any [static]fleet vessel. Mayday, mayday, mayday. Drengin invasion fleet has [static]”

and then, the dispassionate vocalization of the computer: “Transmission ended…”

Mason and Hyksos looked at each other, and without a word they took their stations to make sure the message was being routed properly through the Terran Starfleet CommNet.

From: Captain William Norrington, TSS Bellicose
To: Captain Elizabeth Nelson, Supply Officer, Terran Starfleet Headquarters

Transmitting…
This is Captain Norrington, of the Bellicose. As you are aware, my task force was ambushed by the Drengin to clear the way for their invasion fleet. Until we can effect repairs, my ship and TSS Resolute are stuck here on the border. Since we’re here, we’ve begun search-and-rescue operations (salvage, however, is beyond our current capabilities). I normally report directly to Admiral Rencheyev, but I wanted to forward this data-pad recording to you. I know everyone at HQ has their hands full preparing the Sol defensive perimeter, including you, but I thought you needed to hear this. It was found in the Valiant’s Combat Information Center:

Recording playback initiated…
My name is Charles Nelson. I am the Executive Officer of the TSS Valiant. By the time anyone hears this, there won’t be a TSS Valiant anymore. There won’t be a Charlie Nelson, either. I don’t understand. I don’t understand how this happened, or why. How did the Drengin hit us so fast, and so hard? How did they know where to target our ship, and why was our armor useless? Why do they attack now, after so many years of nothing? I don’t understand. I don’t understand why I’m still alive… Life-support is gone, and I can hear the explosions getting closer as the hull tears apart. Everyone else got to die… What was my great offense that my agony is prolonged? [pause] I can see… parts of me… parts of my, my anatomy, that I should not be able to see. [sobbing] [screaming] SO MUCH PAIN! [coughing] So much pain… So much death. ‘Lizbeth, I miss you. I’m so sorry. I love you, honey. Goodbye.
End of recording…

From what I knew of him your husband was a superlative officer, Captain. I am truly sorry for your loss. Good luck, Captain Nelson. Norrington out.

Very good, enjoying it alot. Not many story writers on this forum which is a shame. Yr style of writing reminds me a little of Peter Hamilton, a excellent sci-fi writer.

Not familiar with Hamilton. Any titles you'd recommend as an introduction to the author?

Hey CarnalSin, just wanted to drop a couple of lines congratulating you, I am a fan now, and you BETTER write that story all the way to the victorious or bitter end . It reads fast and interesting, and I enjoy the style (comunications and such). Anyway, english not my first language so sorry for the incoherence, but you are writing a nice story to keep in my mind the next time those darn Drengin decide I am too poor to pay and to weak to defend myself and must be exterminated, heh.

My sincere thanks, Juan Rayo. And don't worry, the story won't end until it ends. Don't worry about your English either. Seems peachy-keen to me.

…This is a Global News Network Special Report…

Sources inside Terran Starfleet have informed GNN that a Drengin attack on Earth may be imminent. This disclosure came only minutes after GNN obtained the communications log of a civilian freighter under government-contract that was en route to Wisp in the Altarian system. The log indicates a series of distress calls were intercepted late last night and early this morning, but the transcripts of the messages were not available for authentication. Responding to repeated GNN inquiries, the Federated Government released the following statement: “Nothing’s wrong. Stop making trouble.” Despite this comforting reassurance, the Office of Home Planets Security today raised the Threat Level from “Elevated” to “High”. GNN will continue to follow this story as it develops.

We apologize for interrupting your scheduled programming. For more on this or any other GNN news story, access our directory within the CivCommNet, and be sure to tune in at 1700 hours for “GNN News Tonite”. And now, we return to the chilling conclusion of “When Multicellular Organisms of the Kingdom Animalia Attack!”…

The Night's Dawn Trilogy

The Reality Dysfunction

The Neutronium Alchemist

The Naked God

and

The Commonwealth Saga

Pandora's Star

Judas Unchained

All real page turners. Some very interesting visions of humanitys possible future outlined in those sci-fi novels.

Keep up the good work.

She frowned. The display was unchanged. Simulation number 43 was complete, and it yielded the same outcome as numbers 1-42: the defeat of Battle Group Sol, the complete destruction of Earth’s orbital defense platforms, and the annihilation of the Earth Defense Forces on the surface. The only discernable difference in this iteration was that the imagined invaders had employed poison gas, releasing it over the planet’s population centers. The results could only be called “overkill.” Once the Drengin had achieved space and air superiority, they had exterminated all human life on Earth in an estimated 45 hours.

Slowly, deliberately, she raised her index finger to the screen, and tapped the bottom right corner three times in quick succession. The monitor blinked off, and her reflection stared back at her from the now-black surface. But she did not see decorated Terran Starfleet officer Commodore Miriam Levy, CO of the mighty battleship TSS Jove. The woman she saw was small, powerless, vulnerable, almost brittle. The woman she saw was scared.

“And why shouldn’t I be?” she thought with a wry smile. The Jove had been heavily damaged in 12 simulations, and lost with all hands in the other 31. Her parents, her brothers, her niece, and all of her friends were numbered among the projected dead. And then her smile faded as she forced herself to confront the thought she had suppressed for days: David would die with them.

She exhaled slowly, ordering her tears not to fall. She was unaccustomed to having her orders disobeyed so blatantly.

Ever disciplined, Levy consciously invited anger to overtake her anguish. After all, everything about the situation was maddening. There was still time. He could be saved, they all could be saved! The Drengin fleet would need 2 weeks to travel to within striking distance of Earth, even with their reportedly advanced new engines, and she knew that her Battle Group could delay their landings for at least another week or so. In the space of three weeks billions of civilians could be evacuated to New Eden, or maybe even as far as the Altarian border worlds. It was blatantly obvious that their tactical position was untenable and dictated a strategic withdrawal. She had been shouting that argument at everyone from Fleet Admiral Rencheyev to the Secretary of War since the distress call came in from TSS Bellicose, but the decision had been made: there would be no retreat. Starfleet and the Earth Defense Forces would hold the Sol system “to the last man”, and the civilian populace would remain on Earth “in case conscription should become necessary.” The public was not to be warned until it was too late to escape; every taxpayer was to be drafted into the EDF “if need be.” Despite her objections, wireless contact between the CivCommNet and all military vessels and installations had been severed, to ensure that the appalling “plan” wasn’t leaked to the news media. Levy balled her hands into fists. “You’re killing my son!” she heard herself scream. As the sentence roared out of her, she wasn’t sure if she was accusing the policy-makers, or herself.

Slowly, she fought back the hysteria that was encroaching on her sanity. “If I can’t warn David about the invasion,” she reasoned aloud, “then I’ll just have to stop the damned thing before it begins.” And with that, Commodore Miriam Levy straightened her uniform, swept a wisp of hair out of her field of vision, and turned her terminal back on.

From: Captain William Norrington, TSS Bellicose
To: Fleet Admiral Alexei Rencheyev, CINC, BG Sol

Transmitting…
This is Captain William Norrington of TSS Bellicose. It is with great pleasure that I report: basic repairs to TSS Resolute and the Bellicose have been successful, and we are underway. ETA in Sol system is approximately two weeks. We’ll be late to the party, but we’ll be there, sir. Don’t know how much help we’ll be, though. Captain Marquez reports the Resolute is operating with 72% hull integrity, which is well within battlefield tolerances, but Bellicose is near complete structural collapse. I’ve ordered Resolute to take point, and she’ll engage targets only when approved or when fired upon. Bellicose will try to provide effective long-range support fire. With luck, we can take out some of their fleet’s support craft behind the main battle line. Good luck Admiral. See you shortly.

She gripped the bulkhead and stared into the floor, steeling herself against her fear.

“Beggin’ your pardon ma’am, but Admiral Rencheyev has ordered us to general quarters.”

So it begins, she thought.

“Commodore, communications uplink with Fleet Command Station Jupiter has been interrupted by…”

I love you, David. God help you.

“…Sir! We’re getting a mayday from fighter screen Delta-Three…”

God help us all.

“Look alive! Sensor ping above and behind us! Tactical target identified: Drengin light capital ship. In weapons range now. Firing!”

I think that'll wrap up this little section just fine. Stay tuned: the next post'll detail the Battle of Earth. Cpt. Norrington, Lt. Hyksos, Como. Levy, and her son have their work cut out for them.

Going on vacation soon, would hate to ruin it by wondering what is going on in this realm, especially the battle for Tellus...
