You can't do it any time, but when you get the dialog that says "Race X is under attack by Race Y, will you honour your alliane and attack Race X", just click no....

Have a look at the diplomatic relations screen. The checkbox to set a trade embargo changes to "Break Alliance" for people you are allied with.

and yeah, you can do that any time. but when you break an alliance, i'm pretty sure you can never ally with them again.

jeez, i thought this was the same post from yesterday... nope, new one. hell, maybe i'll make an updated manual.

You Sure can, when you break an alliance your relations go down to friendly you just need to raise them again to agian see the alliance options.. remember the only requirements for an alliance are the tech and close relations not past relations...

Thats fine for the major civs but how do you break the alliance with a minor civ? I checked and they still have the trade embargo box but not the break Alliance box. ( and I would rather not do the trade embargo without knowing if that will break the Alliance. ( it probably does but I don't know..) I'm sure there is a way to break an Alliance with the minors but it is annoying when I am Playing Evil and want to invade that lonely little planet off in the back 40 acres of my territory and the game says nope you can't they are allies with you and it doesn't give you the option right then and there to break the alliance ( which it should...)

Look you can't break an alliance with minors for some reason try to ask someone to take that system for you and then you can get it culturally if you are superior enough or you can just grab it for yourself by declaring war on the race that took the minor over..
