sounds like a possible language settings problem. You sure you have both engilsh GC and you language settings on your OS is english?

Got the same problem. GalCiv2 ger version (got a german folder in addition to the regular english one). My ingame text is german. My OS is german and I will not change it to english just to play GC2, they have to fix that

dm, you don't need to, just swap the way decimals are arranged. In Germany it's the 1.000,00 which doesn't work. Change it to 1.000,00

Also, I've noticed to get a " in game, I have to press @. And so forth. All the keys are messed up. Not just one game either, and I've noticed it in all 1.1 versions.

I don't think his number settings make a difference for entering text.  I'll see if I can figure out what is going on with the keyboard input.

I have looked in my controll panel. language settings and they are set to english.
I also checked in my gal civ 2 /data folder and only see a folder for english. I looked for anything german or any european languages and found none. So i am stumped.
I checked in the options folder to see if i could change a setting somehow and nothing.
this is the only game this has happened on and i play alot of games so it must be my gal civ game . and i must have missed where this Y with 2 dots over it came from. BTW what is that symbol called anyway.

Y with an umlaut by the sound of it.

I have the german version Pmutzu and got the ÿ problem anyway. Had the problem already with the english demo. GalCiv2 is using standard us? keyboard layout. Whatever it is, this have nothing to do with the language settings, because the ÿ do not come when Im writing, but out of nothing. iW when I want to rename a planet, the window pops up and this ÿ appears from time to time there, and I have not even touched the keyboard. As said, it appears in any text editing dialogue...

So the concensus is that there is nothing that i can do to remove that Y thing? It is really annoying when i try to type a description on a ship and name a planet and have to go and delete it over and over

In the control panel on the language settings on the advanced tab make the the non-unicode language is english as well.

As a programmer I see the y-umlaut character all the time, because it is hex for byte FF, which is used for a bunch of stuff like marking the end of variable length strings and the like. So I'm thinking it maybe has something to do with unicode because it's looking at the wrong byte, like perhaps the program is expecting non-unicode key input but is getting unicode from your key presses, or vice versa.

I don't know, just a guess.

Any Designers of Galactic Civ 2 know how I can fix this problem . or at elast disable it from happening. i believe that Astreeter is correct in the fact that this is a Unicode problem.Could this have something to do with my conversion tables in my language settings in the controll panel on the advanced tab?

I had this problem before.

I have a Microsoft wireless keyboard and I found updating the drivers helped, and also replacing the batteries (to give it more power) or move the keyboard and the IR reciever closer together helps alot. I haven't seen that Y character since.

I'm not sure what exactly fixed the problem, drivers / batteries or range. but its worth a try.

What language OS so you have (I mean originally)? Is your keyboard set to the layout of your country (i.e. english layout wouldn't work well with a german keyboard)? Try setting the key layout to your country's and the language to english.

I can tell you for a fact that 1.0, 1.1 and 1.11 all work on a german XP set to german and the original (english) GC2 version.
