Map Wrap

Not sure if it's been already suggested...

Has anyone suggesting making the map wrap, like a world map (E-W)? Or four-way (E-W and N-S)?
(Technically, I suppose to map would run NE - SW)

I think it should be an option when you creating the game. I think a lot of players would like to avoid giving the map "corners".

Some old strategy games like Reach for the Stars had maps like this.

That would be great!

Real galaxies don't wrap?

EDIT: Bracing for impact from exo-solar experts in 5... 4... 3...

Real galaxies have more than the number of stars even Gigantic Maps can have. Think of the map as a slice of the galaxy. You want a game that allows you have even a fraction of the number of planets out there? Wait for Spore. Might be other games, but that's the one I'm lookin' out for. xD

And we know Galaxies don't "Wrap"... The vote is still out wether or not Universes do.

Your average spiral galaxy is basically planar with dimentions of radius and thickness similar to a compact disk. Since the middle of most galaxies is a rather hostile place, a compact disk is a great analogy. So if you wanted to be really accurate, a round map with a hole in the middle about 30000 parsecs across would be the real thing. And for all intents and purposes, that can be 2D as well.

A parsec is about 3.2 light years in distance in case anyone was wondering.

No, I don't like it.

I look at every game is a new section of unexplored space, I just wish they didn't use our home planets each time. I wish you could link them together somehow.....

Kinda like simcity4 did with mutiple cities being joined together...

Of COURSE the universe wraps. What, are you in highschool? LOL

But yeah, the map is clearly a slice of space... and sorry, that doesn't wrap. It's not pacman - unfortunately.

Wouldn't a wrapping map kinda would simulate a flat opened 3D object like a cylinder or sphere?

Why not as an option, would it kill th AI?

Hi!
Has anyone suggesting making the map wrap,

Yes, quite a long ago. At that time I voted against, and will do the same now. I played the R4tS quite a lot, but really hated that map wrap. Nowhere a safe border, open for attacks from every direction, hard to navigate. No thanks.

I understand some people don't like it -- but I think it should be an "option" for people who do.

In terms of the physics... well it's presently a 2D game right?
Like Kosty said, you could claim the universe / galaxy / whatever is a cylinder (or a sphere if it is 4-way wrapping). Maybe the gravity at the galactic core is too strong, the stellar matter (or whatever) is too dense there, or it is just a big ball of energy, black holes, etc.

I think every civilization also thinks they are the center of the universe. Starting in a "corner" in space makes even less logical sense to me.

Again, it's just a suggestion for an option -- not a requirement for every map.

The main thing I would worry about is killing the AI, and path setting functions (trade routes)

well, from a different perspective here, since I'm used to the x-axis world wrapping (left and right sides) of the Civilization series. I think having it wrap on all sides would be confusing if it just scrolled, so maybe a pac-man style wrapping where you go off the screen and appear on the other side.

as for this bieng a 2D game, the civilization series works on an essentially 2D map, even though Civ4 has 3D rendering, the game is essentially 2D, so it is possible. However I HIGHLY doubt they will be able to ask Firaxis to borrow that type of code due to legal issues, etc, however the Civ series has a wrap on one axis (the X axis), here we are talking about at least 2 axises (the X and Y axis).

Personal opinion would be no to this. I can see an argument for having the option by visualizing the galaxy differently, but I would still say no to a 4-way wrap since in a real galaxy there would be stars that would be on the outskirts / edges that would essentially be like a 'corner' of the map we have. A 2-way wrap maybe, but that just seems wierd to me in such an environment, it would feel like playing a civ game on a planet.

As an option, it wouldn't hurt though, and if they did decide to impliment it, I wouldn't think there would be much trouble with the AI and pathing. It's probably harder for us humans to visualize than for the computer once the restrictions were taken off. I guess the question is, are there enough people to support this option warrant adding it? This thread is a good place to start. Even if not officially done, maybe you can look into getting it modded in.

I think every civilization also thinks they are the center of the universe.

Any space faring civilization that is unable locate it's position in a 3D model of their galaxy wouldn't get very far and was probably the result of the US public education system.

I think its a good idea as an option. Strategies would completely change for it.

And whats all this nonsense and trickery? The universe IS flat, just like the Earth!
