Dregin Mass Suicide

Playing 1.11, crippling dificulty, huge galaxy. The Drengin declared war on me, and I commenced handing them their ugly green bottoms, as they never had a chance. I don't question the war declaration - the Drengin got shafted in the colony rush, and my empire bisected theirs, putting most of it under potential cultural threat. And I'd just gobbled up the Carnoids, so I can see where they would feel pre-emption might be a good idea.

But about halfway through the war, after I had near total space supremacy and no unprotected planets, they launched about a half dozen full, unprotected transports. I know that they were full, because the population on several Drengin planets went from billions to millions in one turn. Of course I blew them all up with no trouble at all.

I've never seen anything that insane before - even when the computer liked sending out unescorted transports, there was usually a juicy, unprotected world they were apparently going after. In this case, the computer's action can only be described as mass suicide.

I see it all the time. Wave of ships. Then wave of transports. Its just too bad the status of the ships aren't monitored before the transports are sent out. [ouch]

I've said this before- they should move a fleet of warships along with a fleet of transports, always on the same square so that they are effectively the same fleet. The warships take out the defenders, then the transports invade. I understand that proper multi-fleet armadas are incredibly processor intensive and thus impracticle, but surely this sort of coordination isn't too hard? After all, in effect you've actually cut the number of fleets the computer has to worry about in half.

This would make an enormous difference to how well the AI fights wars.

I've actually seen the opposite; the invasion fleet which is a mix of transports and small fighters lags just behind an attacking fleet that the AI is using to clear a path. In one instance I managed to take out the lead fleet (though I took very heavy losses)....at that point the transport fleet turned around and regrouped with another attack fleet that was being sent up. Very cool, until I lost my manufacturing capital.
