Fleets in orbit question/bug? 1.1

Not quite sure how fleets in orbit around a planet work. I make a fleet, put it in orbit, and in the orbit view it shows each ship individually? And so if I want to launch the fleet I have to launch each ship individually and then recreate the fleet? Also the AI often doesn't put it's orbit ships into fleets (even at harder difficulty levels) so they get destroyed one at a time? Is this just me or has anyone else noticed this?

Suggestion: for each fleet in orbit around a planet, make the portrait appear as the strongest ship, then a small number to denote the number of other ships in the fleet. Launching keeps the fleet intact.

Fleets in orbit are formed automatically when an opponent attacks, provided you have an Orbital Fleet Manager. They are then disbanded afterwards. I don't know how the fleets are organised exactly, but I'm guessing that more powerful ships are put in first.

You cannot have fleets in orbit unless you build an Orbital Fleet Manager, then your ships will create a fleet only when attacked.

Not so. I have made fleets, then put them in orbit, then was attacked, and they still fought as a fleet.
Bringing them out of orbit breaks the fleet, because you can only bring them out one at a time. But put them in all at once as a fleet and they remain a fleet.

well, moose, u probably only had the "fleet in orbit" and "orbital fleet manager" on the planet.

being the only ships there, they, of course, would form into the original fleet.

I am a new player, and I have trouble understanding this thread, especially since you guys do not seem to agree.

For the moment, my basic concern is :

If a planet is attacked, do all oribiting ships defend it at the same time, during the same battle?

The logistics of fleet organization is less urgent for a new player, especially if one does not know how to obtain a "orbital fleet manager". I have not played a long enough game, yet, to see one of those on the tech-tree.

No Sorceresss, if your planet is attacked and you have lets say 3 ships in orbit for defence, they will not defend as a fleet. The enimies fleet will pick them off 1 at a time. I think to get a fleet manager you need to research 1 of the logistic techs, ive never used it myself....

Also I would like to know, If I build a fleet manager, do ALL ships in ordit defend as a fleet. Or is it just the planet the manager is built on?

Sorceresss:

You need the Planetary Defense tech to get an Orbital Fleet Manager. It's down the Planetary Invasion branch of the tech tree.

A better tactic is to launch ships, form a fleet, and then intercept the inbound hostiles. That way you keep the enemy of bay, and you save some tiles.

Ships in orbit around a planet will not form fleets if attacked unless you have:

A) An orbital fleet manager, which only effects the planet it is built on, and it will only form a fleet that is equal to your current logistics ability.

B) A Hyperion Fleet Manager, which also only affects the planet it is built on and it will form a fleet with all the ships orbiting that planet regardless of your logistics.

I'll add an example just to clarify. I have a logistics ability of 15. The Altarians are attacking three worlds that I control

World 1 has no fleet manager and has 5 small defenders (15 logistics points total). The Altarians attack and only one ship will defend per attack- each attack costs 1 movement point. If they have five movement points left they can (and will) destroy all of my ships.

World 2 has an orbital fleet manager with 7 small defenders (21 logistics points total). The Altarians attack and 5 of the defenders will form a fleet. The Altarians destroy the entire fleet and attack again using another of their movement points. The last two defenders will form a fleet and most likely be destroyed by the Altarians.

World 3 has an Hyperion Fleet Manager and has 8 large battleships (48 logistics points total). The Altarians attack and all 8 large battleships will form a fleet which totally destroys the Altarian menace.

The example probably wasn't necessary but I felt like being long winded.
