assassination event

There I was, cruising peacefully toward a tech victory, with the three remaining races all close or friendly toward me. Suddenly I get notice that someone from my race has assassinated the President of the Iconian Empire, and bang! I've now a war that, while it won't stop me from victory, requires that I take the time to wipe out the Iconians before taking that tech victory.

The paranoid question therefore: could this event have been set up to occur when one is cruising unopposed to victory, or was it truly 'random'.

random... i think?

happened to me whilst i was simply building stuff; but was building influence starbases in their terratory for tourism/buffer zone.
(their planets were falling to influence left right anc centre)
i wasnt pursuring a culture victory... but maybe it has something to do with it?

It is random except....I believe it is usually associated with another random event where you voted yourself a bonus connected to galactic olympics or a galactic organization of some sort. A reason to host the leaders of other civs was created providing the opportunity for the asassination.

I could be wrong and it may be purely random but I have found that most of the UP bonuses that are voted on have a potential down side in the future.

I got that one last night, with the Altairans. There was no olympics or any other thing like that in the UP resolutions so I think its just random. It *could* be weighted so that if you haven't been in any fights, it bubbles to the top. And you don't have to wipe them out pnich, just bloody thier nose a bit and propose a peace treaty. They will probably take it.

My fight with the Altairans continues tho, because they are stubborn and refuse to acknowledge that my ships are more powerful than theirs and that the planets that I demanded in return for peace will be mine whether they acceed to my terms or not...

Spying reduces the likehood of events like these.

Hmmm, not in my case, I had maxxed out my espionage, to where it says "no further spending is required" against all opponents before I got the assassination event.

This is the main reason I will no longer form an alliance with the Altairans is that some random event , assignation etc. will occur and I will be at war with them. Usually with at the worst time for me.

I got an event where the Altarians accidentally insulted the leader of the Dregians which sparked into a full blown war. The funny thing about the event was that it said something to the effect that because they didn't research Xeno Diplomacy or something like that

Three of the four times I've seen this event was after a long period of intergalactic peace. And of those three times it was always the biggest, most powerful race that it happened with.

Seems to be both a random (chance lowered by espionage) and a triggered event designed to keep things from stagnating.
