Galactic Civilizations II v1.11 released

Galactic Civilizations II v1.11 released

Performance, memory optimization, AI

https://www.galciv2.com/Downloads.aspx

As previously mentioned, while most people were happy with 1.1, the performance improvements and other features we added ate up memory that not all users had available which in turn cased out of memory and other problems for those users.

Rather than simply remove the caching and other performance boosts, we re-engineered saved games and did intensive profiling to opimize things. So v1.11 should be faster AND use less memory than 1.1.

We also made some AI tweaks and other gameplay tweaks.

You can view the full change log here.

The next stop is v1.2 which is mostly about making modding easier for both modders and users. If you check the library, there's already a lot of really cool stuff available. The modding support in 1.2 will make it much easier to organize mods/total conversions.

You can get 1.11 either through Stardock Central or as a stand-alone download.  Have fun! !FROGCARE!

Just an update for me...i tried again this AM and it downloaded fine but only if i clicked on the update buttons on stardock. If left to update via the update button from the game (which initiates the auto-update), i got the error.

This makes the games from the old version load longer it seems.

Yeah, they said in the release notes that you shoud abandon your old save games because the patch won't work correctly with them.

Great game, but this is a must for future releases hopefully soon.
I am finding that when i want to upgrade ships in the shipyard, the little icons at the top left that tell you what the ship has are almost useless, their is no text or info and makes it very hard to work out what level of the item you have in your ship, I t takes ages and a lot of fiddling to remove and check what the item is and what level and space it takes up. Upgrading is becomeing such a pain and time consuming, Can you have a description or some pop up screen that tell you the information you need when the mouse goes over the items in your ship.
Ideally I would like to click on the item, the left of the screen that lists all the items available will highlight the item and i would quickly have the information available and readily look at the left of the screen to see what can be upgraded of the same item type.
That would be the biggest improvement to the game

I encountered a strange glitch with 1.11. I upgraded to 1.11 and started a game. About 75 turns into the game, I thought things were going way too easy. The AI wasn't doing anything - not building ships, not sending out colony ships, nothing. Not sure what's wrong.

I'm still having a problem that appeared in 1.1. When I upgrade a ship that I've already designed, I actually lose everything and have to start from scratch. It's as though 'upgrade' means the same as 'new'. Does anyone know if it's a bug or am I doing something wrong?

Running the game on a P4 1.7ghz, 512mb ram, 128mb video card. On a medium-sized map with 5 starter civs all with Int = Bright (3 remain), now on Turn #470, the game chokes. I've disabled most the the eye-candy and it still crawls along between turns. It takes over 2 minutes to load the saved game, and often takes over a minute between turns. Before I start playing, I exit from every background app I can think of (except anti-virus stuff). No help.

If the game is choking at this point, I don't think I'd ever be able to play on larger maps with more civs. And upgrading the pc is not an option right now. Memory bank is already full, too.

Anyone got some performance tuning tips?

It seems that the Dread Lord AI got a great deal stronger with this.

I had been playing and winning the first Dread Lord scenario by having the other races conquer them. In this iteration, the Dread Lords were smart enough to come after any planet of mine that even attempted to build one starship, let alone try to get enough cobbled together to have a fleet (What would mask ones preperations at building a fleet, anti-espionage?)

So the other races and the Dread Lords kept trading worlds, but the Dread Lords seem to slowly be expanding. After spending more than twice what I normally would spend playing this I threw in the towel.

Patch for the Collectors Edition is GalCiv2_10X_BonusPack_030806.exe
and the normal version is GalCiv2_111_BonusPack_050806.exe
Question which is better? I have used both and noticed some differences.
Like when building a new ship it shows all the upgrades you have done at the top with the 1.11, but not with the 1.0X2.
Cheers

Hum, you should disable the anti-virus too. And 512 mb? Isn't the game recommended for 1Gb of ram? I have 1GB of ram and an Athlon 3000+. I'm playing at huge galaxy with crippling AI and i did not notice much difference. I do have a Geforce 6800 GT as a graphic card, which must help some.

The eye candy is nice but does not give much to the game. After a while, you just don't notice it anymore so you might as well turn it off. What they should do is take the time while i'm doing my turn to crunch some AI so that when the ai play, he does not need much more time to do his stuff. Of course you will have to give priority to the stuff i'm doing, like moving my ships and attacking, but still it would be an optimization over waiting for the ai turn.

Oh and i've notice a little bug still present with the latest version. The Torians seems to make a check point where they send most of their ships and they just sit there, doing nothing and not assembling into a fleet and coming after me like they should. This was reported waaaaaaaaaaay before the patch so i tought it would be fixed. Granted, i have seen it far less often, but it still happen.

Are you playing with the tactical view with only icons?

Guys--

I have toi play GalCiv II on a laptop with no internet access. I DL patches etc. here, and port it over via external media. Unfortunatley, after running the 1.1 patch, I can no longer play the game. It asks for my serial number, which I input, but the game then attempts to access the internet. The Secure laptop I use to play will NEVER have access to the internet, so how can I get it authenticated so I can play with the patch installed? Thanks.
