Confused with ship upgrades/tech upgrades..

Havne't played Galciv in a while so I forgot and can't find the answer yet....when you research/find/mine something that improves the STATS of your ships, do they increase automatically or do you have to go to a starbase/port to refit? I though you had to like orbit a planet for a week to get the stat increase....might be wrong..
Thanks

Design a new ship of the same size with the parts you want, then select the ship you want to upgrade and select the new ship type, then pay the cost, you can also select to upgrade all ships of that type.
It takes 1 or more weeks to upgrade depending on where they are in relation to your planets, and only has 1 hit point while upgrading.

if you mine a military starebase it will do it automaticly to all ships already built and all that will be built.
upgrades due to reasearch need to be designed into new ships, you may then "upgrade" your ships anywhere

Also, as of right now you can't upgrade a fleet all at once without disbanding it. As was stated, you can upgrade a single ship and you can pick the option to upgrade ALL ships of that type. But there is no way to upgrade only one fleet out of five total, let's say, unless you disband the fleet and do each ship individually. I'm willing to bet that will change in the next couple updates, though.

That was in earlier in the game, but for some reason it was removed. I think it had something to do with people paying like 5 BC to upgrade damaged fleets to the same ship and getting them 1-turn repaired.

Don't quote me on that though.

So now I always keep same ship types/versions in the same fleets.
