Opera and forums: Odd behavior.

I'm using the latest version of Opera, v.8.54.7730, and am encountering a very strange problem with loading pages I have responded to, and sometimes have previously viewed. Initial views of a page are not having this problem. If I'm in "Identify as Opera" or "Identify as Mozilla" (using the F12 button), the pages work perfectly fine. However, if I am in "Identify as Internet Explorer" something very strange happens when I access a link.

The page will not display, and what will happen is that Opera is constantly requesting and downloading data from the forums. I let it run for about 10 mins and it downloaded over 3.2MB for a page before I just gave up. It will just keep going. These are not pages with images or such. They are simple text posts.

So for those that are experiencing this problem, you don't have to use I.E. (which is what I was doing as an initial workaround). Just hit F12, select "Identify as Opera", and you shouldn't have any other problems.

I'm not sure if this is a problem with Opera or the forum software. Don't know anything about that sort of architecture. Perhaps given that this is happening with what seems to be after a post is modified, it's related to Opera's cache. Or perhaps it's related to the way the forums respond to Opera spoofing I.E.

Try using opera beta 9. I once had it open while playing a game, and at one point I alt+tabbed out. It was laggy, so I guessed it was the game. Then I remembered I was playing windowed mode, and opera was using 1gig of memory (as opposed to the average 70k)

so, a bump for people who have problems.

And why do you pretend you have an inferior browser?

Hehe, I think you misread. I love Opera, very much so. I've never had any spyware or adware problems since I started using it. I love the mouse gestures, and often recommend the browser to other people. For some reason I had that "Identify as I.E." enabled, I don't know if it is selected by default, or I had done so at some time or another, accidentally or intentionally.

And yes I do notice that Opera tends to use a seemingly extraordinary amount of RAM. In fact right now it's using 50MB RAM and 54MB PF.

I'll never stop using it though. A restart of the program every few hours usually solves the memory/cache issue.

That's what I meant. Why identify as IE? Opera rules, and IE... doesn't.

Incidentally, although not opera related, here's something I got off poweruser.tv. All firefox users, visit it. You'll be happy.

BUT WE HAVE WIDGETS!

I believe Opera keeps your entire foward/back history for each tab until you close it out, which is why it's memory usage can get so high. On the plus side, this makes foward/back much faster. After all, I paid for all this RAM, so it better be getting used!

Only real Opera 8.54 oddity that I've noticed with these forums is that hitting the 'reply' button will get the status bar up...though it'll stop pulling data it never goes away. *shrug* I can still post fine* though....

*fine, as defined for this wacky forum, means every 1 in 3 tries.

I use Opera, but found this forum does not like it.

Fix - use Opera for everything else, installed and use Firefox for this site.
I have no problems posting or loading this site - unless the server itself is down - since moving to firefox.
I hope that this site is setup to work better with Opera eventually but it feels like a lost cause..
I just love the mouse gestures! simple and easy...

Its interesting you mentioned that Opera uses lots of memory....
That would explain a couple of issues I have with my system...hmm.
Running GalCiv2, opera, firefox, and other stuff at once is fine normally but it does tend to slow down eventually.
I thought it was just the game minimized but if Opera uses lots of memory, that could do it too....

Lots of memory in capitals. 15 times what it's meant to, after a while.

Although as I said, I'm running a beta, and maybe it's just a memory leak issue.
