Should I actually change governement types

I have played a whole host of games, but I have never changed my governement. I have not seen the need. Am I missing something?

The more advanced governments allow for better commerce and better research, but the people get a better say in the governement, and so approval is MUCH harder to keep up, which is shown at election time once a year. If you have less than 51% of the popular approval, you'll lose the election to another party, and lose all your bonuses.

So, in conclusion, if you're a guy looking for galactic conquest, don't go there. However if you are persuing a tech game or want to be a nicer guy to everybody (I.E, NOT a warmonger), The other Govs. (Star Federation, Star Democracy, ETC) are a better way to go.

?

They give you bonuses and so why not take them ? i dont remember in any of my 30+ games going lower than 75 approval so you shouldnt worry about that ...also the tech give you +10 diplo and 5 influence

The other governments give you influence and diplomacy bonus so you might want to consider them. But if you are playing evil and you have a low approval rating some of your colonies might rebel...

Or if you have low taxes and a strong moral, change the governments and get the production/research bonuses, and just maintain good morale.

Or, be an ass and tax em to death until 1 week before the election, and drop taxes to 0 and win a landslide victory, just before driving the taxes back through the roof.

Maybe tax slider moral should have an average factored into it? Like the tax level of the last 8 weeks averaged = the moral, so dropping taxes doesn't have an immediate moral boost, but takes time to gain the trust of your citizens.

Maybe weight the more recent weeks slightly more then the weeks farther back so a good drop in taxes will have some effect, but it'll be 8 weeks till the full change is felt

I play Star Republic and I'm on a conquest game, I always maintain 70% of approval and I'm playing at challenging difficulty, for my third game. It's my first time I try thoses setting and everything working great !

This is actually not a problem to do war or make a conquest with this type of governement; I dont know for the others.

Anyway, the vote period and thoses difficulty just had something necessary to this game, in my opinion.

I disagree with admiral, I always go for advanced governments, even when going for conquest. The economy/research etc advantages are HUGE. Normally switching to them, moves me from barely afloat to rolling in dough status.

When the $$$ comes rolling in and it does when you have 25-75% economy bonus, it's easy enough to lower tax rates, so your approvals should be high enough to do whatever you want.

if bush just put Taxs down to 0% and siad he would make it work would you re-elect him? Sorry i mean like a decent president.
If you do that repeadedly i think your "people" shoudl catch on and then start using average

I always switch even though I am a conquering race. My economy doesn't function without the other governments.

Star Federation is quite powerful for raking cash, believe me. (Why do you think The United Federation is a Federation ? )

I usually have advanced gov. very early and I go conquest never had an issue with moral. We're talking Suicidal lvl games. guess its all on how you play.

Switching govs is good. even if it means leaving the united planets.
they voted for imperial as standard gov just before i finished researching star fed. so i left u.p. a few turns later and doubled my income from 5000 to 10000 bc with no effect on approval (>95%) also i lost all my traderoutes (< 1000bc).
another bonus was, that i don't have to pay the 20% warfare tax anymore.
i can't see any change in my relations either. so i wonder why one should even be in the u.p.? (except for the trade of course)

i'm currently playing a huge galaxy on tough and a very peacefull game. (for now that is, as conquest is my only victory conditon)

As long as you research approval technology there is no reason not to change. I always upgrade to at least a democracy. These are powerful technologies and they should not be traded with the AI.

i can't see any change in my relations either.

You get the diplomatic and influence bonuses after researching the tech. You don't need to change governments.

By far, the more advanced governments are better. It's like taking someone else's fully developed Manufacturing, tech and economic capital all at once. Actually, it's better than that.

More money. More industrial capacity. More research capacity. More prestige. You won't need to tax people to the point that morale is a serious issue, because you'll be making major money at any tax level. You can do things you'd never be able to do as an empire, such as being able to afford to outright BUY a fleet of dreadnoughts armed with nano rippers or disruptors when someone launches a surprise invasion.

And if the UP decides you should become an empire after you've already become a federation, leave the UP. Your trade routes aren't nearly as valuable.

I fully agree, advanced governments are a no brainer, no matter what strategy you play.
