Ship upgrading

OK - sorry for the noob question here, but when I click to upgrade one of the ship models in my shipyard, it starts me from scratch (ie, just a hull, nothing attached), when all I want to do is to make sure my ships with lasers have the latest lasers, my ships with beams have the latest beams etc...

Is there no way to update lasers/engines etc automatically?

Or do I have to build ships from the ground up every time I move a step up in an offensive/defensive tech? (yeesh, if true)

Thanks for your help!

I was just going to ask the same thing. At least if it only removed the functional components, it wouldn't take too long to upgrade. For me, the time consuming part is finding all the non-functional parts and replacing them correctly. Anyone?

if it only removed the functional components

Strange, that's exactly how it works here and I can toggle the behavior (remove functional items or keep them) at the options screen.

Did you update to 1.1?

Works for me in 1.1, if that’s any help.
This option is disabled by default in the options screen, however.
Just press ESC and check the appropriate box (second tab from the left, as I recall it).

In version 1.0 you can't upgrade the core ship designs, your own however, are fair game. If you've got 1.1 installed you can upgrade the core ships, making things much easier. However, whether or not you upgrade or make a new design, once it's saved, if there are any ships of the previous type around, ie; you've got 1.1 and done an upgrade on the Starfury with better support, lasers, whatever else, you can then upgrade those ships. Upgrading and changing the saved design prompts you to upgrade existing ships, creating a new design doesn't. However you can find a ship of the class to be replaced and select Upgrade from its menu, then check to upgrade all, select the new model design, and okay it.

I am really glad that function was added to 1.1 but I feel that it might be of more use as perhaps a series of checkboxes on the components list maybe? So you can click upgrade and then select which components you want to keep. That way if you ONLY want to upgrade the engines it can remove all engine modules but leave weapons.

Thoughts?

Thought:
Not much of a problem for me as it is. It would probably take me more time to fiddle with the checkboxes then to remove the components by hand.
Here is a tip: You can use the delete-key to remove a component once it’s highlighted.

Something I would find useful however would be to see what component it is I just pressed. Like the name and stats in lower left corner when You are about to place a component on the ship. I find it somewhat hard to determine what component it is I’m fiddling with at the moment since they all look the same to me.

While were on the subject:
Does anybody know how to upgrade ships in fleets?

Thank you for all the helpful replies.

Much appreciated.

I will check out the options screen tonight.
