Game crashing every 20 minutes or so

May be linked to game saving... not sure

from GalCiv2 Forums
Hello everyone, looking for help or the very least see if others are having same problem.

Since version 1.1, I have been experiencing crash problems during the move sequence. ( after pushing NEXT game moves all the pieces around ) It doesnt do it everytime, however, it does do it VERY often. I have the game set up to save every 6 moves and these intermission crashes seem to correspond. I am not a 100% sure of this but looking back I can say that the timing matches very well. I have sent in my SMART EXCEPTION report everytime but I dont think it will get looked at unless others are having same problem.

Anyone else?

Can you post your debug.err info please? If I read your post right, the crashes correspond directly with your auto saves every 6 turns? You might try disabling the auto save feature in the options menu if that is the case and just manually save.

I save a lot, so I have always turned off autosave on every game since before Civ 1 came out. Seems to have helped me, as half of the games I have played in the last several years seem to have bugs in the autosave

Do you have AA turned on in your graphics options? If so turn it off, this cause's crash's on some cards.

I know probably nothing about debug files... So well I'll ignore your debug file, if it's all the same with you, and give some advice that stopped me crashing all the time....
I used to have a fairly small virtual memory page, my computer wouldn't be able to process all the infomation moving from the game (unsaved) to whatever folder it needed (saved)... I increased my virtual memory to over 2000mb (with a max of 3500... could have been 4000) and my games only crashed once since; but well I have no idea what caused that... I blame my computer!... Anywho, if your game tends to have the increasing virtual memory symbol bottom left of your screen when it crashs try increasing virtual memory... (Control panel... erm.... performance and maintenace, I think... system... advanced... click settings under Performance... Choose the advanced tag and then there should be an option there under the heading virtual memory to change it, or something like that... Then input the new amounts of memory you'd like and restart your computer (having clicked ok)... whoa I waffled, hope it helps though.

I had the same problem with the autosave. Sometimes my game crashes for other reasons, but that's another story...
As of now, I just delete the autosave before it can save to it becasue the problem occurs when I have an autosave, and it wants to autosave again, and it has to go through the whole "PreviousAutoSave" thing.

ANd it does say that "GalCiv2 has run out of memory. It will probobly crash soon." right after it has crashed. I'll try increasing my virtual memory, Ardek and I'll be back if that works.

Thanks, I will try turning off autosave. It may help who knows. I am not sure what AA is but I think you mean anti aliasing. If so, I will turn it off if its on. if neither of those two solves my problem, I dont see how increasing my virtual memory would hurt anything. So I will try that also... Thanks everyone !!

ALSO, if anyone could take a look at my debug.err file and tell me if there is a problem somewhere I would appreciate it a bunch!

UPDATE... I turned off anti-aliasing and auto save. The game still crashed during the move sequence.

Hmm, that's weird that in both instances it crashes after those random event posts. We'll tag your smart-exception, Lyndy, and see what we can dig up.

See if there are newer sound card drivers for you Sound Blaster. The ones you have are from last year. You video drivers seem pretty new. You might check your motherboard chipset drivers, sometimes memory problems are related to your chipset.

both sound and video are up to date. Not sure how to check my motherboard chipset drivers nor would I know where to go to get them updated.. any help would be great. THANKS.. for your assist
