Orbital Colonies

Is there any mods out there for orbital colonies, kinda like in HALO, or Ian M Banks scifi books? Instead of terraforming planets you could populate dead systems with artificial worlds. Is that even doable?

Heh. The Halo Orbital was a pretty small one by Banks' standards.

I don't think you can put planet tiles on anything but planets, and I don't think you can add planets atm. I sure would like to see some better starbase models, though!

I can't believe you didn't even MENTION Gundam. Shame on you. SHAME.

THNK GOD I am not the only Niven reader here and did not have to remind ppl about his series of novels... (damn kids)

Gundam uses the cylinder habitats, right? Orbitals are a much better idea... unless you want to move them.

At least Niven can admit his Ringworld was a tiny bit unstable and patch the concept later. A full ringworld is less attractive from a game perspective than an orbital, since ringworlds need absurd materials and absurdly large amounts of it.

Depends on which Gundam series you're talking about.

i thought ringworld was around a sun like a wee bit of a dyson sphere. I was thinking a little smaller.. or that peter f hamilton guy

I'm surprised "space stations" cannot be made as level-0 planet orbitals, in fact, I'm REALLY surprised they aren't forced to be limited to planets and mining resources. Every popular sci-fi station was either in orbit, guarding a spacial whatchawannacallit, or a direct half-way between two planets in the same system.

Such limitations would also clear up some space clutter...

Yeah, it'd be GREAT if you could add a module that let you add a building or something. It wouldn't matter how much it cost - but the ability to build 1 or 2 tile platforms would be neat.

And yes, the most reasonable ring would be an Orbital-style, 100,000km one, not a star-encircling one like Ringworld.

Now that would be cool. Would really give class 0 planets a purpose and would be a self imposing limit on starbases instead of the current 4 per sector limit, which seems more arbitrary and based on technology limits (ours not the games). Unfortunately there is no way to mod this in currently, that I'm aware of.
