Just started

Hi everyone.

I just bought and installed the game. I have heard that it has a lot of bugs. I am especially concerned with the one where the game crashes. What updates should I download to get the best experience (is there a patch that remedies crashing). I haven't actually played it yet, but I want to ensure myself from problems.

Secondly, I installed Stardock Central and registered my game. But in the Stardock Central, under the "Games" menu I can only choose to download "Tutorials", "movies" and "multimedia" files (plus demos of other games). How do I get access to other updates?

Thanks in advance.

In Stardock Central, try checking the "Show pre-release versions" box. That may show the latest patch if you haven't got it already. Should start with "1.1", there aren't really that many bugs, it used to crash on me about once a game, but that was when I was running the beta version of the patch, so you should be fine if you have updated all your drivers.

The 1.1 should be visible without checking this checkbox, because it's a final version.

Hi again

Whether I check or uncheck the box, I still only get the three choices that I described above. Strange...

I have been playing with the original version for more than an hour and no problems. Is version 1.1 worth being downloaded?

Did you buy the downloadable version of the game? If so maybe the 1.1 patch is already applied?
just a thought...

there are a lot of changes in 1.1 (mainly to improve gameplay ), so its probably worth getting.

When you got to 'Games' in Stardock Central, try clicking on 'Galactic Civilizations II'... not tutorials, multimedia or movies. Click on the game itself.

Then look under the 'Installed' and 'Available' columns. What do you see?

Under the 'Installed' column you should see that 1.0(or similar) is installed. Under the 'Available' column you should see 1.1(or similar) is available. There is another column to the right labeled 'Action'. Under that column you should have a clickable button appear labeled 'Install'.

I'm just trying to let you know what you should be seeing. I'm not sure why you haven't been able to get updates other than the movies, tutorials, demos, ect.

Well, now that I think about it there could be one other possibility. Make sure you have entered in the right serial number for your game. My game came with(kind of weird to me) not 1, but 2... serial numbers. One on a manual sized slip of paper, the other on a sticker on the underside of the cd case. I ended up needing to use the one on the cd case in order to have my game properly registered.

Hope that helps

Most people have gotten far past the point of constant crashing. When I got the game there was one thing that caused a crash, a bug in building too many starbases, but it was fixed quite quickly and I've had absolutely no problems with crashing at all. My system is definitely not high level. P4 2.0Ghz, 1gb RAM, Geforce fx5200 256mb.

However, I do keep my computer clean and updated. I limit what runs in the background, regularly update my drivers and whatnot, and otherwise try to keep things running as smoothly as possible. That seems to be the best thing anyone can do with this game or any game.

This forum has a fair bit of complaints and notices of problems, but that's primarily because if the game works a person isn't spending time on the forum extolling the virtues of Stardock. They are busy playing.

Also, the game just went through 4 (5?) public betas between the original and the patch. There's tons of bug reports, etc stemming from them...and that's expected with betas.

Very true. One of the things I noticed, that might help future releases, was that the stardock downloader had downloading beta versions as default. Methinks it would make for less complaining if folks had to specifically choose downloading betas, rather than specifically choose not to.

Yesterday, I spent 5-6 hours playing the game (out of the box, without patching) and it didn't crash once. I did play on the beginner and with a small galaxy, so I have to see what will happen when I move up. But so far I am happy.

Linuxman, in Stardock Central under the "installed" I see...nothing. Just hashmarks. Under "avalable" it says 1.10.027.
