GalTrek™: The Oberth(s)

Star Trek Ship Hulls for GalCiv2

The Oberth(s)

(Click thumbnail images for larger version)

Polygon Count (triangles): 6,612 and 6,700 - Woot!
Defuse Mapping: Zip. Zilch. Zero.
Light Mapping: Everything.
Normal Mapping: Again, I didn't bother.
Ship Builder Hardware Mounts: Yep.
In-Game Hull Size: Cargo.
Hours Spent Developing Carpal Tunnel: 8.

First, let me say that I wish to conduct a beta in the near future to make sure these hulls are working fine. Anyone who is interested in helping with the beta (first dibs on the hulls) can contact me at [email protected]. Also, those who wish to be notified when a new hull comes out, feel free to send an email to that address.

I’ve spent a little time scratching my head trying to figure out what the hell to do about cargo / colony / transport hulls. My conclusion (with the help of all you users) is the Oberth class. These versatile crafts were used for many applications in the Star Trek universe, so I have chosen two of them to use as cargo hulls in GalCiv2.

These ships have been temporarily loaded into GalCiv as large hulls.

Again, I am using fully lit textures in the GalCiv2 engine, so I have circumvented the engine’s lighting pass for this model. I am still trying to figure out if this is the best way to go about texturing, so please compare my older existing models with the Oberth and Excelsior ships (which used this lighting technique) and tell me what lighting system you prefer. The new method actually makes my life a little easier.

Here is the ship list so far:

Cargo: Oberth Model A (120m) [Finished.]
Oberth Model B (120m) [Finished.]
Tiny: Shuttle (~10m) [Finished. link]
Delta Flyer (~10m) [Finished. link]
Small: Danube Runabout, MAYBE! <mumbles something about ds9 fans>
Medium: Magellan (?m) [Finished. link]
I might redo this one.
NX (225m)
Miranda (Reliant) (243m)
Defiant (120m)[Finished.link]
Large: Intrepid (344m)[WIP]
Excelsior (467m)[Finished. link]
Prometheus (414m)
Huge: Galaxy (643m)
Sovereign (685m)

Other then the beta, I do not intend on releasing the models until the “mod” is complete. That will obviously be after 1.2 is out.If you are interested in using this model pack, please post a reply to this thread, or shoot me an email so that I know what kind of user base to expect.

Cheers.

These are really looking great, Brian! When we get the "Full-Mods" stuff working you'll be the first to know, since this will really be the ultimate test of our code.

Awesome work!

What's your motive behind using shuttles as the two smallest hulltypes? I'm not sure how much 'physical' size is governed by hulltype, but cramming the caps into the top three seems a bit odd. Vanilla the 'tiny' hulls are far too small to be anything other than shuttles, but things like Defiant should surely be small?

well its obvious by the pictures that go with the name up there that they are by arranged by the actual size, and actually are pretty much by power, the sovereign for example is very large and very powerful, the defiant on the other hand is quite powerful but could never survive alone agains something like a sovereign, and if you look at the approximate sizes listed the tiny hulls are around 10 meters, as opposed to the defiant at 120 meters as a medium.

great work brian

very impressive.
I will definitely be interested in trying out your mod once it's ready.

Hey, you might want to check out some ship work for an EV Nova Mod called "Starfleet Adventures" that Uncle Twitchy has been doing. Might give you some good ideas for ship rendering and possible usages for ship classes.

If you have some time to kill, check out the link to the forums site (the official site is currently down). Keep up the good work, looking forward to the finished product.

BoogieBac, thanks! Yes please keep me informed of the progress of the mod framework. I would be happy to do test implementations during a beta.

Pnakotus, I had to find a compromise between classifying my ships by overall power, or by hull size. Power wise, the defiant should be a large, but size, it might qualify as a small. Giving the defiant such few hit points (for a small class) would be a poor choice, but grouping it into a large category would be wrong also, as the ship is so tiny. In the end, I thought it best fit into the medium class. As for the shuttles, where else should I put them other then tiny?

Darth Griffin, sure. You are free to host I there once it is finished. The official “Star Trek Mod” has expressed interest in integrating with my hulls. I think I might allow this, but I would probably still releasing a separate mod for those who do not want to change the rest of the game content.

fitzpant02, thanks for the link. I will check it out.

That's a fair point - I'm not sure how much such things can be modded. However, since the weapons et al change throughout the game - and the only significance of the Defiant hull in ST is that is isn't full of useless sensors and lifesupport modules, and contained cutting-edge weapons and defences - I'm not sure how that will translate.

In any case, excellent models. I hope you get through the rest of the modelling without any problems!
