Help anyone? Upgrading ships in and out of fleets?

Is there a way to upgrade and entire fleet of ships? for example I have a fleet of ships called hollycowMKI and I replace the design with hollycowmkII is there an easy way to upgrade this fleet without disbanding the fleet. Moving each ship one at a time to a new area upgrading it then reforming the fleet.

Also is there an easy way of upgrading all ships of a particular type automatically no matter where they are. e.g. I have three-ship classes hollycowmkI hollycowmkII and holly cow mkIII

I have a collection of Mk I and mkii around how can I force all mki to upgrade to mk iii's?

Not sure about the fleets but if you are up to date with patches I think 1.1 has a fleet manager screen that may do what you want.

If you want to upgrade all of a certain class select one of them, tell it to upgrade and just above the box where you select the type to which you wish to upgrade there is a checkbox called Upgrade all ships of this class. Tick it. It will cost a FORTUNE to do a lot of ships but it is very easy. And will probably upgrade ships within a fleet. Also works on freighters in a trade route.

In the upgrade menu for a single ship you can also select a checkbox to 'upgrade all ships of the same type', which will work on all ships anywhere (in fleets or single, as well). However, upgrading individual fleets can only be done by breaking the fleet down and upgrading the ships individually. I know, I want the option to upgrade fleets only too.

I think it depends on where the ships are - I seem to remember it having something to do with distance from the nearest friendly world or whether they're in your 'sphere' of Influence.

Bear in mind that while being upgraded, a ship only has 1HP, as far as I know.

BigBadButch is right, it depends on how close you are to friendly territory. Near a planet you control, only a week most of the time. Outside of that, 2-3 usually. He's also right, while upgrading ships only have 1hp. I picked off two enemy fleets last night that I caught upgrading because of that.

Also make sure you have very deep pockets, as upgrades are very expensive!

And you will need at least one of the ships out of a fleet before selecting "upgrade all ships of same class" option.

Also, FYI: Checking the "upgrade all ships of this class" actually seems to cost you more total than if you upgrade them each individually for some reason, as of the last time I checked (beta 4a, I think)
