How did the enemy get so tough?

Hey,
I've been playing a peaceful game, focusing on tech. Now I decide to go to war. I attack an enemy fleet with my fleet, which is logistics 28, and full of my top of the line ships. I didn't look at the enemy ship stats because I was sure that I would beat them, but they beat me pretty handily. after they beat me I looked at their stats. While my maximum logistics is 28, theirs is 40. I'm at the end of the logistics tech tree. Also, their ships have superior attack ratings to mine, but I'm ahead of him in tech, and I built my ships with the best components available What am I missing?

race abilities bonus, logistics techs, hyperion logistics center...increase logistics limit.
race abilities bonus, mining base, military starbase near by... increase attack ratings.
race abilities bonus, miniaturization techs, hyperion shrinker... increase amount of stuff (weapons etc.) that can be fitted in a given ship.

see if they have better "miniaturization" than you. research down that tree to increase space of your hull (and pack up more weapon/defence in your new design). focus your fleet and target their military starbase and military mining base first before attacking planets.

good luck

Very high logistics is often the result of the enemy having multiple Hyperion Logistics Centers. Each race can only build one, but if they capture Hyperion Logistics structures from other races, they can get scary logistics.

And man, logistics makes a difference. To see one illustration of how the effectiveness of a fleet changes with logistics, consider this: Link
The x-axis is the number of hitpoint=12, attack = (8, 0, 0), defense = (2, 1, 1) ships in a fleet. The y-axis is the probability (from 0 to 1) that a fleet composed of this number of small ships will win when attacking a single, scarier ship with hitpoints=60, attack = (39, 0, 0), defense = (22, 0, 0). You can see from the graph that with 8 of the small ships in the attacking fleet there's a less than 10% chance of winning; with 12 ships it's greater than 90%. So you're right to be concerned about an opponent with 40 logistics

Hmmmm... I didn't think of this when I first read your post, but are you tech trading with the other civ's? I guarantee you they are trading heavily amongst themselves.
