Massive Problems after getting the first patches

Hello everybody.

Just in case my english will have kinda german grammar, I will at least say sorry to all people who might read the following words.

After I played the demo for around 10 times I choosed last week to purchase this aweful game. I got my very nice maded gamebox at a local retrailer, installed the game and had lots of fun with 1.0 . I also visited this place here near every day for more informations and bugreports.

Yesterday I had plently time and I planned to final get the first time a patch for GalCiv2. So as I arrived at home I installed stardock, got the betapatches, got the movies and the tutorials. After the upgrading finished, I started the game , I enjoyed finally again the intro with sound (as I did with the working demo) and the next was a "critical error message" form Windows and CalCiv2 crashed.

Ok, I thought: I am prefered, I read all the articles in this forum about probs and so I will just uninstall and reinstall the german version from my CD. As I finished the game started again with no probs. I choosed to not reinstall the patch again and so I wanted to play a new game. I made my choices and finally the new game started. Damn .... The planets and the Ships dont appear in 3D, just the 2D-Symbols... OK, I remembered the tip here in the forum to change my regional settings into US-English, so I did. But this didnt helped out. Still the Planets and the ships still dont show off as 3D models.

To make it short and to end my lousy english ... I deinstalled and reinstalled the game around 10 times, I tried it with patch and without patch, I tried my saved games from the time I just had the german 1.0 on my computer, I changed resolutions, added or removed graphic-features..... nothing helped ... I can play the game only without the 3D-views of the planets and the ships ...

Does anyone know what kinda registrykeys I need maybe to delete manually after I uninstalled the game, so that after a new installation just from my CD's, a really fresh and hopefully working GalCiv2 will be my honour???

My US version works great.
maybe you need to talk to the Europe distributor (Paradox? I think). they are responsible for the German version (I believe).

good luck

I remember reading something about this problem in the forums, but I doubt I could find it again. There's a good chance you'll be asked to post your "debug.err" file. Ironically, if the game was still crashing, you could install smart exception (from stardock central) and it would generate a report all but telling them what line of code caused the crash. With the game working, granted with a major glitch, this may prove more interesting to solve.

Have you tried zooming in? Try rolling the wheel in the middle of your mouse, see if that fixes it.

If you are getting just the symbols on the map, go to Options, click on the "Interface" tab, and change your "Tactical View Zoom Level" option to 25. This option sets the level at which the graphics change from 3d to 2d. It sounds like this is too low.

You could also try deleting your prefs.ini file in My Documents\My Games\Galciv2 folder. This will reset all of your options to their default values.

For the problem you are experiencing with the version 1.1 update, please post your debug.err file. This can be found in the same folder as galciv2.exe. (usually c:\program files\stardock\totalgaming\galciv2)
This file provides information that can help us to determine why the game is crashing. Thank you.

thank You very much, this worked it out. I remember now that I "played around" with this setting (also with the settings of stars and nebulas in the background). Actual the "tactical view zoom level" was on 85, I putted it back to 25 and now I can see the planets and the ships again in their whole shining

I am very happy now, cause I spended the last two hours with trying several sysstembackups to see, if I can find an older configuration who might work ... No one worked at all *g* ...

I will now try to patch the game again and see what happens!

For now I just want to say -THANK YOU- for helping me!
