Game crashes system every time .
I start a new game, then right after galaxy setup and all other setup screen, the "hint" screen appears for a few secs, then blue screen - which goes away too fast for me to read it, and system reboots.

I have downloaded SmartException and I have it running, but I don't seem to get the .zip file - I think system crashes before the file gets created.

I just updated my video and sound drivers - these were the most recent I could fin don the HP website.

Here is my debug.err (it didn't pickk up my serial# - available by request if you want it)

please update your drivers

I would love to update my drivers! But from where? I have the latest drivers available on the HP website, and a goolgle search doesn't seem to turn up anything newer, either. Do you have any hints? (It's not even a very old machine - just purchased about a year ago...)

Yes! Thank you! I have new driver, and game now loads and starts! Fantastic!

Now I just need to learn the game... !

I must say, this is the most responsive and helpful community I've yet seen. Kudos.

If that doesn't solve it, post again and I'll see what we can do.

Another question is -- are you picking a random map or one of the premade maps?

That did seem to solve it, thank you!

I originally tried fiddling with the setup options - density of stars, and so on - and with just leaving the defaults. I don't think I ever tried using one of the "named" maps. At any rate, with the driver update procedure which snepp pointed me to with the link, everything seems to be working fine now!
