Fun ship designer bug

Weeeee

I think the computer is abusing this, so you should too

Go into your options and disable "remove functional when upgrading a ship design" (as in leave the check box blank)

Go design a ship by "upgrading" an existing design, in my test case a Yor colony ship (I wanted it to look like the original, I just wanted new engines), and have fun

I was able to fit 6 Ion Drives (they only used 4 capacity each for some reason???) and a whole bunch of life support on mine in addition to whatever it started with before I began adding things (colony module, 3 life supports)

I noticed something similar. You can put more on when you upgrade a basic design, than if you choose to make from new.

But in the german version (mine at least) it never removed anything when you wanted to edit your old design. seems like this was changed with one of the patches for some reason. i was pretty surprised when i updated the game and suddenly it automatical removed all the nice stuff i had put on my ships. ^^

This problem will be fixed for final version 1.1

Unfortunately, this bug is still in 1.1 Final. One more thing, AIs are definitely abusing it.

Did you start a new game with version 1.1? If not please do. I am not able to reproduce this in version 1.1. Do you have any miniaturization techs?

Here is what I did:
I started a new game. I upgraded the Yor colony ship with "Remove Components" checked. Then I added 6 Ion engines (10 each) = 60 out of 68. No more room for a colony module. Is this what you did? Please let me know how to reproduce this if it still a problem. Thank you.

The OP wrote disable "remove functional when upgrading a ship design" (as in leave the check box blank), which is the opposite of what you listed, CodeCritter. How did this get buried three pages deep without being answered?

I started a new game after upgrading to v1.1, and I have a problem like this, as well. I can upgrade a user-created ship, and when adding components, they require the listed amount of space to be available, but do not actually take up the full amount.

For example, a 10 space piece will not install on a 52/60 design, but might take me from 50 to 58 spaces used.

Yeah this is a really 'imba'' bug. As to how did it happened is listed below.

1. I re-install GalCiv2 and patch the game to version 1.1 yesterday.

2. Started a new game yesterday and created a cargo-hull 'template' with all the necessary comestic visuals without any functional parts via the shipyard during the 1st turn. This template would allow me to upgrade the 'template' into different classes of ship such as colony, constructor and trooper and then saved it accordingly. So if I need a constructor ship with 3 speed right off the bat, i would select the 'template', add the construct module and 2 Hyperdrive+ and saved it as constructor mk1. So far so good. the sizes of all the components tally up 35+10+10=55.

3.Now in the 'ships avaliable' list in the shipyard, I have the original template and constructor mk1. I then played the game as usual upgrading the template with better stuffs and then saving it as a new ship whenever I have the tech for more powerful engines etc, Note that the template remains 'functional components less' throughout the entire game.

4. A while ago, i started a new game, went into the shipyard during the 1st turn and realised that my constructor mk1 which i designed yesterday has 10 empty space -45/55 with the same exact components. I managed to add in 2 more hyperdrive+. It seems that the hyperdrive now takes up 5 space instead of the usual 10. So now we have ourselves a 35+5+5+5+5=55 ship. I then deleted the 'constructor mk1' via shipyard and redesigned another constructor mk1 via the upgrade template step and the same thing happen.

5.And the best part of all, in the midst of typing this post, i went back into the game, started a new game and the bug is gone. Quited, re-enter the game a second time, started another new game and the bug resurfaced.

Thanks Mint21, this is exactly the problem . I was always wondering how AI could fit 17 Atk & 8 Def in a medium hull ship and yet far behind me in both weapon & minimization tech until I discover this bug.

I just put 32 units on a hull with 31 units of space. Shows right there at the top of the ship designer 3D view, "32/31" and the whole bar is red, but I saved it and built one anyway.

I'm sorry I misread the original post.

After saving the upgraded design and restarting a new game, and then upgrading, the bug was there, so I'm looking into it.
