Scout ships act like sheep on auto explore

All they do is follow each other. I build like five of them and hit "W" and they go to the same place along the same route! It dosen't matter if a send them on diffrent turns or not. No, they are not in fleets.

Try moving them manually to different locations, then setting the auto-explore.

They will still always go to the same place.

Building scouts is pointless unless you want to manually move them. Personally I start games with Stellar Cartography and build custom Colony ships right from the start with higher move points, and let them do practically all of the exploring, although I still set the flag ship to autoexplore.

yeah, those scouts act like lemmings, its a bummer. i just use scouts to keep my planets from suddenly being invaded.

Move one up for two-three turns, move one down for two-three turns. Now set Auto-Explore and see if they follow each other.

I have seperated them like that, in fact i've started them on opposite ends of the map. They always end up following eachother with only a slight difference in movement paths.

I'd much prefer a 'set a thousand waypoints' system to the auto-explore. It's really crap, particularly in comparison to the excellent AI elsewhere.

The auto-explore definitely could use some improvement, but it's not that big a problem. Maybe instead of moving the scouts 1-3 turns in different directions, try moving the scouts directly into different sections of FoW. In my current huge-map game, I've been trading for the AI's scout ships and have 20+ scouts roaming about. At one point, 2-3 synced up and I did the above, and no problems since then.

Thanxxx. But I used Mistoffele's colony ship stratagy instead. It worked and I'm in the middle of my best game yet. Thank you very much Mistoffeles.

The autoexplore feature is almost worthless. It just means the ship will slowly and ineffciently scout, without taking into consideration the activities of any other scout. Honestly, simply being able to say 'search these sectors' would make it much more useful - scouts always end up going the least-useful way.
