How do I upgrade ships in orbit

Just beeing curious about how to upgrade ships that are currently orbiting a planet.

Currently I have them to leave the orbit, upgrade them and then send em back, when the job is done. Is there another way, that pobably saves me some clicks?

Not that I have found. But if you are upgrading all of a certain type of ship, you can bring one out and use the 'Update All Ships of This Type' checkbox to do it all in one shot. If you have the $$$ it is a real time and click saver.

Yes in my last game I again came to a conclusion how lacking this games UI can be. But it´s too good game to miss even if the UI is terrible at times. SD hopefully continues to improve the UI

Using one ship to select "upgrade all" costs more than if you do them individually. Yes it saves clicks but you have to pay for it. Ships being upgraded only have one HP anyway so just being in orbit is not really protecting them. I personally don't think it's worth the extra cost.

Yes. somewhat inexplicably, the cost of doing an upgrade all costs a fair bit more than upgrading them individually. IIRC, one time I checked, the upgrade all would have cost about the same as indivually upgrading the same amount of ships plus one.

Unless a ship has a TON of experience points, I can't imagine why anybody ever upgrades anything. For the money it costs, you could buy a whole new ship from scratch. Outside of a massively experienced crew, I can't think of a single good reason to ever upgrade a ship.

... because you don't want to pay maintenance on that old piece of junk, and scrapping it is just not enough to make up for just buying a new ship (upgrading IS cheapter than buying the brand new one).

After what I've seen, upgrading is by far cheaper than buying a new ship.
