Campaign: Achilles Heel WTF!!??!!

Before I vent, I just have to ask...are players supposed to fail this mission? There is no way to win Achilles Heel, PERIOD! Let me explain. My tech tree only let's me research beam weapons at this stage of the game. So, what do the Dread Lord ships load up on? Tons of shielding against beam weapons. Oh, did I mention that I'm only allowed to build medium sized ships while the Dread Lords have cruisers the size of my schlong (I'm talking big). They have 40 attack and 20 shielding while the most I can build at this stage is a weak arse fledgling of a ship.

The mission suggests that I take over their planet, ARE YOU KIDDING ME?? I can't even put a transport into orbit without 1 Dread Lord ship waiting like a dog in heat to blow it out of the universe.

What does this all add up to, a no win scenario. Is this a test like in Star Trek when Kirk was faced with the Kobiashi Maru? Is there ANYONE here that has any advice other than, "bend over and take it like a man?"

I haven't played it but I'm guessing that if it was impossible to beat the scenario, it would not have been included. And look at the bright side: people are always complaining about the game being too easy to beat--you don't have that problem.

Have you miniaturized all you can, and gotten up to your max logistics? If you have the ability to cram lots of reduced-size weps on a smaller hull, especially if they are good weps, you can beat a larger ship. Same for fleets, if you can group up more ships than your opponent and have the ability to make smaller components.

Another possible tactic is to hit them with a wave of your best fleets and hope to kill the defenders through attrition.

Never bend over and take it like a man, for two reasons: men don't bend over and take it, and aliens are never gentle. Instead, consider it a challenge and keep working at it until you've won.

you're pretty right. I don't know if it's impossible, but it certainly is fantastically difficult. My suggestion (what I did) is just lose, get over it, and play the alternate mission. it's not a walk in the park, but it is one compared to the mission against the dread lords. it gets you to the same place. the first 5 (I think) missions all have alternates that get you to the same place and can be played, and are easier.

If you like modding, you can open the scenario and map files and give yourself lots of cash, or a bunch of awesome techs and stuff, and then you can have a fun time of throttling the dreadies, also

It took me a few tries, but the way I beat it was I captured the 3 planets to the west early, but left everything to the north (the Torians took those)

By the time the Dread Lords had killed off all the ships of the Torians and Alterians, and started killing my ships at the 2 original outposts, I had Medium ships with 10 laser grouped in fleets of 4 (so 40 attack) and if they attack first, could usually beat a DL Battleship, but usually lost 1-2 ships in the process.

However, I started sending all my ships and troop transports to the west, to hide them, once I had 4 fleets and 1 fleet of transports, I moved them north while sending other random ships into the middle.

The DL's continued to assault ships in the middle planet sectors while my 4 fleets approached thier world.

in the end 3 of my fleets were lost, but the last one managed to clear the orbit, and the troops moved in to victory.

I lost a heck of a lot of ships, but the key for me I think was the blitzkreig that I managed to pull off by hiding my ships from their battleships

It's not that hard to win, if you follow the objectives. As ever, against the DL it's soldiering that counts. Then work on plasma equipped medium hull ships, it's all over. If you get the first attack in, odds are you won't lose a single ship.

I beat all of the DL missions before I played any other game. I lost once, the game that the Dread Lords first showed up, but I was able to play it over and beat it. I figured out a good strategy against the Dread Lords, and never lost another game. The strategy I used was to expand quickly, and let them take a couple of my planets, then take them back, and continue until I have stolen some powerful weapon techs, which I then used to mop the floor with the Dread Lords. Since the Dread Lords have no logistics capability, you can gang up on them in fleets and defeat them rather easily. Try that out and you may be able to beat them.

Work fast, soldiering and weapons before higher end infastructure.

Also try turning up the difficulty to at least normal, your allies are sitting there doing nothing when its set to cakewalk. On higher difficulty they stand a chance and it doesnt really affect the dreadlords since all they do is build ships anyway.

That's a good strategy, however, it does get interesting when the Dread Lords capture a planet and capture logistics tech with it. Not one of my planets, probably a Torian or Altarian. Then they start coming in fleets of 3 and 4 ships, which makes it a bit harder. Fortunately, I had also obtained Blackhole Eruptors (one of my allies captured the immediately preceding tech, I could trade for it and research the Eruptor). Warp (and later hyperwarp) were also very useful, together with Eyes of the Universe. Comparable firepower, better speed, and nearly perfect information about their movement allowed me to defeat their fleets.

Essential components: an ultra fast (40+ speed) cargo hull with a laser (troop transport / constructor / early starbase killer), and reasonably fast (20+ speed) constructors with eruptors. Not essential, but very nice to have: fast (20+ speed) large hulls with zero point armor and Eruptors or Disruptors touse against fortified starbases, and slow (13 speed) cargo hulls packed with eruptors (over 200 missile attack). With the exception of the ultra fast laser cargo, all were used in fleets of 3 or 4. Knowing the position of their fleets, and having enough speed to attack and get out of their range, allow you to always have the initiative in combat. With enough firepower, the fleet battles usually are over before they can shoot back.

I admit to being a little scared to face the Dread lords AND have to take over their planet!

I played similarly to leftcoast in that the top planet i left to the others i also left the smaller of the middle world alone too, just so i wouldn't be alone when they slapped down the front line. (This was probably my third attempt at it ) and also took far left to get the tech going.

then it was military sarbases that kep me alive until i could work my way to the top. do not underestimate military starbases - they are deadly. Eventually you don't even lose a single ship against their battleships. even cruisers with sheilds die as you also shoot mass drivers and missiles. Churn out them double/triple engined constructors!

Also If you are lucky enough to capture dreadlord conquered worlds there is a high likelyhood of gaining tech, so if you're desperate and happy to cheese your way to victory have a welcome world that you can swap back and forth.

Become tech leader in this campaign as it was my main source of income (i rushed my planet imps). It also means that you could potentially impoverish the others so its a good idea not to be too greedy.

In a nushell - Military starbases, sell tech, don't be front line fodder, or cheese your way to victory.

This level is worth the effort as i learned the balance of the game and how to be effective at empire building.

good luck

I know my friends i tried being fair anf fighting the DLs but they're so hard to beat i did the mission an easier way. The mission is called "achilles heel" what does it mean? If you fight the dread lords they will kick your ass, but at the start they wont. You start with a sizeable bank account and tech to make the small hulled ship with plasma weapons (or very close on normal mode this is) that i can't remember the name of (one the game provides). Build some colony ships, buy them if you must get in range of the DLs main base, buy a starbase on the planet closest. Research planetary invasion while doing this, make sure to keep your colonies reasonably developed. Get ships out and launch them at the DL base world. When i did this they only had 2 ships orbiting the planet a defender (lazer attack of 30 something) with about 16 hp i think and a scout. I threw the ships at the world destoyed the 2 ships, landed my transports and took over, blitzkreig them! The game gives you the clue and the means to do it (on normal mode anyways you start with a lot of BC, thats the key really take the DLs out before they can do anything). Check out their base world when you capture it, it'l have some awesome buildings most likely). And remember you don't have to beat the DLs you just want that world!

Good luck!

as always with dreadlord (same for apocalypse mission as for achille's one), just cheese them !
get good drives, beeline adv transports, let your colonies grow enough people to feed your transport, then design fast constructor with a bit range upgrade to be able to reach your targets, then design ultrafast transports with adv transport pod (1 or 2 depending of available people to launch), build some, colonize a bait world when ready with your portship, wait
the DLs will grab your bait wolrd (don't let him grow too much people, you don't want the DL to fail their invasion ^^)
recapture it with your troops, grab the tech (or not it's a lotery) rize and repeat.
Once you got either ultra fast drivers or a powerfull weapon, tech what you miss (weapon or drive) build ultrafast and ultra weapon mounted ships, gather them to a massive assault to obliterate any defense then throw your transports, game over.

Almost as stupid as ctrl-N map milking to get those nasty precusor tiles.

however there is another method, i first used when i didn't already know about invasion tech grabing

build a dozen fast constructor (at least 9 parsec but more is better), then severals specialiszed attack fleet as well as transport (they must move very fast (mostly beams in achille scenario).
When you are ready you will do your assault in one single turn :
build a military base with the planet in area of effect, then upgrade as many ship assist as possible but remeber that defense assist work only if your ships have already a basic defense value

Then with the bonus from your base, attack with your fleets and watch the power of those great pyramids ^^

At least it worked for me, of course cheesying troop tech is easier assumed you're lucky enough (like grabbing hyperwarp 2 and blackhole gun in just 2 invasion)
