Request - Stand Alone Ship Builder

Hello Developers!

I have a request... Would it be possible for you folks to whip up an out of game stand alone ship creater for us poor fools at work? I would love to be able to spend time building ships to use in my games without actually being in the game. What are the chances of this??

It's been brought up numerous times. The developers have indicated they would like to add something like this down the road, time and resources permitting. No promises.

In theory it shouldn't be totally impossible to do this at home. I grant that it is a reasonable amount of work but it should mainly be a case of making a front end to pick up each piece, place it and then record the settings in the xml file.

Right?

I would really like this idea. I want to create an entire darwinian evolution of custom ships for my custom races. But the problem is I have to play these races game after game and research all the tech etc to have the ability to make the ships. If I had an editor, I could sit at home and make as many fighters etc as I wanted, and then save it, and then play the game with the ships already waiting for me to research. It would be awesome!

I don't know if this is what you are all looking for but it worked for me.

I started a game with a large map on the lowest difficulty level with only one opponent and turned the research rate to it's highest level. I built only research facilities (helps if you get a planet with research bonuses). I then researched only hulls (pretty much no other techs at all - i think you have to research space warfare or weapons to get access to a couple of the small hulls).

I think it took about an hour to research all of the hulls and since there was only one opponent on the lowest level they were never an issue.

At that point I made all the ship designs I wanted (no techs, just the hull and extras). You can go to My Games folder in the My Documents folder and there will be a ships folder in there. Just copy your designs from there into another folder on your hard drive. When you start a new game delete all your old saved games, and delete the designs in the ships folder. Then copy your ship designs into the ships folder and when you play a new game your basic designs will show up when you research the hull designs. You can then upgrade them as you research weapons, engines etc. This way you don't have to redesign your ships in each new game. It's been working for me.

... Or you could just fire up the "Battle of the Gods" scenario and have all the tech already researched for you....

Has there been any word on this? I was doing a search on the forums and this thread showed up, so I know it's old but I really like the idea

Stardock has said, and showed, that they want to make it easy for modders to, well, mod...one of the most basic improvements they could do in that department, that would not only benefit modders, is add something like what is suggested by the poster of this thread. So please do it ^^
