Random Newb Questions

I am probably on my 4th game. Just getting the hang of it. I am winning my latest game on normal/huge/9 races, but I had a good start. I am playing latest beta. I have some general questions:

1. Is there someplace that describes the pre-genned maps? I dont see a description for them.

2. PLEASE explain the the spending and military/social/research sliders. I thought the three sliders just determined the % of the spending that you were sending to each area, but it seems that sometimes I change some of those sliders, and the spending slider will adjust. Basically, the economy is confusing.

3. Is it just me, or are the Dregnin always a cakewalk? Usually, they are first to fall. (at least on normal).

4. Is it just me, or are the Torians always a BEAST? I hate them. They have waxed me in 3 of my first 4 games, and are #2 in the fourth. I am a good aligned race, but they are public enemy #1. Repeat: I hate them.

1) load em up and take a look. the descriptions such as "4 corners" arent hard to figure out what your getting

2) the taxe rate slider is total tax your charging your people. (higher tax = lower moral) you get population bonusus if you keep moral at 75 or better, and a larger bonus for keeping moral at 100%

the next slider down is your total economy slider, it decides the overall funding of all your projects, social/millitary and research. 100% is best, but if you need cash you lower this untill you start a cash flow, then raise it up once your banks or trade routs come online

the 3 sliders for social millitary and research decide what % of your total economy is spent in what area.

i susspect the reason your confused is that with the millitary slider, if your not actualy building any ships then the % spent on millitary goes back into your bank, thus making your profits seem much larger. with the latest beta its also true of the social slider, if your not building any improvments then the % you spend on social goes back into your bank too.

soooo if you have build a ton of factorys lets say, and are building nothing else you would be getting most of your build percentage back into your bank, now you research a new kind of factory, and all your planets start up grading all at once, you will see a HUGE hit to your total income since all that social spending is now going to build new factorys and not back into your treasury.

3 ) the AI is still being worked on.

4 ) the torians allways blast through the research tree to get planetary invasion, way before any other race it seems (may have been changed in the beta i dont know) the best way to counter that ive seen is to research it yourself and just trade/sell/give it too the other civs. most times in early games they take planets, and dont fortify em, ive had cases where the torians go from controlling 3/4 of the map to having a hand full of planets because i gave away the invasion tech, they are only powerful if you give em a chance to dig in.

Yeah. In my game (normal) The Torians have, literally, 1/4 of the gigantic size galaxy, and it's pissing me off. I recently acquired a great deal of territory (killed off the insectoids). I can't have anyone go to war with them, since everyone loves the Torians...fortunately, I am kicking everyone's ass with regards to technology. If they piss me off too much, I can send some of my super-advanced battlecrusiers in to trim 'em a bit.

I just got some galactic achievement (Forget what it is called, it's only for goodie-two-shoes, though) that doubles the chance that races will surrender to me. This means if the Torians go after someone else, then I will get the remaining planets after the inevitable surrender. Chances are, though, that wont happen. If the Torians try and expand, I am sending my whole fleet down to kick some ass.

To the original poster...I'd try and use the Treaties screen to find out who's at war with them, and who they don't like. Give ships/technology/aid to the people at war with the torians. If they are at war with multiple people, then get everyone to leave the race fighting the torians alone. Lastly, bribe any disgruntled races to attack the Torians.
