Stop AI spying on you

I am playing a technological based custom race in my current game on tough. I am playing good and my objective was to form aliance with other good races to crush the evil ones. I am using small but very advanced fleets. As a consequence my military rating is low and I am at war with arceans, drengin and altarians (they had the alignment change event) since the very beggining. I am focusing on missiles and currently using photon torpedos. All the AIs were using lasers and guns and they were as far as plasma beams and singularity drivers. I have no problems dealing with their fleet using the good aligment defences. Now suddenly the AIs have photon torps which I believe they got spying on me. I didn´t trade the tech and the path to photons is long and costly and I don´t think they had the time and money to reach there. Is there a way to know if the AI is spying on you, stealing your technologies and can you counter it?

Odds are another race you aren't at war with gave them the tech in exchange for them keeping up the war. Check your debug.err, it shows details of spying and trades. No you can't stop it, and I take it as given that the AI is spying on me always. No matter, I have advanced on everyone.

After you reach advanced espionage is there any point in continuing to plough money into spying on that race?

No. In fact it is beneficial to have full espionage spending early in the game, because the price goes up in respect to the total galactic population.

I've found that if I reach advanced, then stop spending...after several turns I go back down to nothing, and have to start over...?

I never stop my espionnage spending. Later in the game, it pays off with free tech you steal from them.

Except if you get those tech even if you stop spending...?

it even says in the "report" - "no further spending into espionage is needed"
you can stop tech stealing by turning off tech trading, but other then that, your boned you should have your espionage maxed out and try to steal some of there tech.
Also a good way of getting tech is taking over a small planet of theres.

How about invading one of their planets, get the tech, build a transport, scrap the planet, let them recolonize, invade again, and just keep this up until you have all the tech you are gonna get.

Then move on to the next AI!

Yeah, once you hit advanced you don't need to spend money anymore =P it'll steal techs regardless. All it needs is that little "advanced" title

Edit: Woot Made captain!! Captain Damiun

If you check out the RaceConfig.XML file you will notice that the Drath Legion has an espionage bonus of 50.
It is the only race to have an espionage bonus, by the way.
So if you are playing against them, be prepared to have a lot of your techs stolen.
And once they get it, it will probably be traded to all the evil guys.

If you want to stop it altogether, just edit the file and set the value to 0.

In the End of Game stats you can see how many techs were stolen by each race.

Oh, and by the way - I suspect that the pirates come from the Drath Legion, and no where else.
