Anyway to increase occurances of pirates?

I have been playing since the release and have yet to see any pirates. Is there anyway to actually increase the occurances of pirates other than just the random events that you have to answer? It seems to me with all the pirates I find on planets etc., that I would actually see more in the actual game. I for one would love to have to hunt some down or at least meet some in battle.

Belive me you dont want to deal with their battle fleet, cost me 19 medium ships to take them out when they showed up in the middle of my core worlds. Where pirates got hold of 2 battleships with plasma II weapons is still under investigation.

They show up in my games on a regular basis but they ususal are not much of a problem or they are someone else's problem.

My only complaint about them is they are almost the same colour as the Drath and are easy to overlook.

Hmm, you know what would be fun...create my own race and play as a pirate. Rather than value planets as a normal race (I guess I may need a moon or something) but make my condition of victory be based on subjugated trade routes and terror against other races. Can't be done as currently programmed but I could REALLY get into that scenario.

Be careful what you wish for. Pirates are NASTY. Far worse than Dread Lords, Drengin or anyone else.

They generally have weapons and defenses equal to whatever you've researched when they spawn, BUT..... They have INSANE, IMPOSSIBLE logistics and miniaturization. I've seen pirate fleets with logistics of 72, with every friggin slot filled. Dreadnoughts, battleships, frigates, heavy fighters and hordes of escort fighters, all packed with impossible amounts of defenses and weapons (except the escorts).

In one game, I was cheating and just researched every possible tech right in the beginning. Later, a pirate fleet spawned that was not possible to beat. Their numbers and attack/defense strengths were so outrageous that I would have had to create over 120 warships packed with blackhole guns to beat them and expect to throw every one of them away to do it. I did the numbers on a piece of paper to see just what I'd need to take that fleet down. Thankfully it spawned out in the middle of nowhere, so I could just ignore it.

yah i had to deal with my first fleet, it wasn't to big of a deal, but did waste a starbase
i think they spawn on larger maps, ive seen a few on med and u need trade routes, i think the more u ( and others) have the more likely to see them
anyway thats what ive expreinced
ps also have to be a few years into a game

seen em twice cakewalked em both times. Donno how yall found super pirates. I personally would prefer far more common occurences of small pirate fleets jumping trade routes.

I've encountered them once on a medium map when i was playing as the Iconians. Me and my ally (terrans) had just finished off the drengin after a prolonged and bloody struggle in around drengi. This left our essential trade routes exposed and sure enough the pirates spawned a couple of parsecs away. They wreaked havoc but by the time my fleet was back to the area they were crushed easy enough. Hurt my economy bad though.

They're annoying. Unless you've got a couple of super ships (say, 2 to 3 times stronger than the average ship around), they'll kick your !@#. Luckily, they can't invade planets.

I wonder if it has to do where criminals are kept, and if they break out or not.
There is also an ability called Crime. Does raising it lower crime or increase it? Maybe I should experiment with it a bit.

Pirates should mostly consist of small light craft which should emerge, raid convoys and flee back to the wilderness from whence they came. They shouldn't have vast fleets including battleships.
