error flipping back buffer to primary buffer

what should I do about it ?

hello,
I had a problem today with a frozen galciv2 that won't respond to commands
I had to kill the process
here's the debug.err
thanks for any information

same thing with new driver
details :
after some time of playing the screen freezes
and I have to kill the galciv2 process
I have had this problem as well, exact same huge list of errors.
Try removing your Audigy temporarily and using onboard sound if you can.

I have had problems with a certain few games, especially EverQuest and now GalCiv2, with this card although I managed to eventually get it to work correctly with EQ.

Creative Labs is notoriously lazy with their driver updates and compatability, I don't know why I continually keep buying their products, must be genetic
Reply #4 Top
the back buffer to primary buffer flip is a graphics related thingy
how would my audigy driver temper with that ?

perhaps I'll try with sound disabled anyway
Reply #5 Top
I've had that error before. One of the things I did was increase my virtual memory to some huge unGodly amount, like 5G. I haven't had that problem again.

You could also try either running in a window or running GC2 at the resolution of your desktop as that would be less work for DirectX in terms of stretching.

I had the same problem with similar hardware (Radeon 9800 Pro). I was playing the game for a couple of hours before the program crashed when I tried to attack a planet. After I selected the atttack type, the Planet Attack window came up. It appeared normal except that the grid at the top center which normally shows the planet tiles contained only white tiles. However there was no mouse pointer so there was no way to proceed. I brought up task manager and GalCiv2 was identified as "Not Responding" . The "End Now" button didn't seem to do anything. I had to go to the Process list to kill Galciv2.exe to regain use of my system.

I was able to restart GalCiv2 and load the autosave and finish the game with no problem. In fact I've played 3 games and have only had the problem that one time. FWIW I am playing the game at the same resolution/color depth as my Windows desktop.

thanks for all your answers guys
my problem is still not solved but I will try to monitor the virtual memory usage + the desktop resolution thingy asap + running in a window

As a sidenote I did try the "debug" option(in the hope to have more information), but the performance degrades to approximately 0.1fps (yeah you read it correctly 1 frame each 10 seconds) due to heavy hard drive usage

I had some interesting results although not perfect but I won't share them as I don't have enough "galciv2 runs" to know if it REALLY makes a difference.
I'll update as soon as I get some valuable results.

I have an Audigy 4 card and have not had that problem. I get the occasional crash but I just start the game again and pick up at the lst autosave.

Funny, I only have a 60MB swap file. I like using my ram more than hard drive. And I have 3GB of ram to play with.

Tonights game actually used more ram than I have seen it use before. It got up to 2.3GB usage using a huge map.
unfortunately
-running in a window brings no change (after some time I get the "back buffer flip" error + "driver internal" error)
-running the game at the same resolution as the desktop (lowered desktop to 1024x768) brings no change
-I also watched the virtual memory usage which never got beyond a peak usage of 47.9%

Hi.

Today I have encountered the same problem as stated above. Knowing that my drivers were up to date since the game was playing perfectly before hand, I retraced my steps on what I did before the crash and I realized that right before I changed the Background Star Density and the Background Nebula Density. Lowering them down (1'500 and 50 respectively) removed the problem and the game ran great.

My specs from the debug.err are as follows:

My background star density is set down to 512. I set it there probably the first week I had the game. Nebula's are still set to 7.

But I wonder if setting that star density down would be a workaround, if not the solution, for a lot of these type problems. I never seem to encounter most of them, and the relesase version of 1.1 has been 100% stable for me so far.
I lowered my settings to 256 / 40 and still have the same problem (with 1.1 final of course)
I wonder if this has anything to do with memory management problems as CariElf said in another thread that there was
I think I'll wait for the next build

the debug message is exactly :
Debug Message: Error flipping back buffer to primary buffer.
Debug Message: Driver internal error

repeated almost indefinetely
I waited for a while
upgraded to 1.31...
but still have the same problem

I still have to disable sound to try to see if that's the problem but I don't have much time to test

meanwhile if someone comes up with any idea ...
Has anyone even discussed throttling back the video card (it's in the options menu). Even though it may not seem like it, GCII is extremely tough on your video card (one of the toughest games to date, actually). If you've OC'd your video card, it may be overheating. Throttling back the video card will help to keep it from overheating - and that's why the devs put that option in ther ein the first place. Try that and see if it helps.

Plus, you're still on version 1.1. That version was failry crash-prone.

Bill

thanks for answering,
-v1.31 is installed

-throttle is activated since a long time but changes nothing in my case
I don't think my card is overheating as it's no longer summer here...
moreover when my radeon 9700pro overheats "VPU recover" kicks in OR the computer crashes if it's really too hot

-tried recently to disable sound from the galciv2 interface but this changed nothing

-the "problem" happen more and more frequently once I begin to make some progress into the game (more colonies, more ships ... )
(for example when I just started my last game I could play for 20 turns or more without problems, whereas now after 3 years I crash in the second of third turn after loading a savegame)

Sorry, Whismerhill, I was going down the wrong path. Something could be wrong with your installation because your debug info says you are running version 1.1 BETA 4.

ok I updated with a newer debug information at the start of the thread to prevent people being mislead...

let me reexplain what happened in the correct chronological order:
-1) the problem is very old and started to happen at the very beginning that I got the game or something very close to that
-2) I tried to sort it out but there was still so much other problems in the game
that I waited for newer versions
-3) I updated to 1.2
-4) I updated to 1.31
-5) the problem still happens

and to clarify no the game was not showing that I was running 1.1 BETA 4 after I updated to 1.31, it's just that I did not update my first very old post (April 18, 2006 04:03:33) with newer debug information

also to give an order of magnitude the first debug information is around 300-400 lignes while the "driver internal error + flip" represents around 1000(around 20seconds) up to 30000 lignes(around 5minutes) depending on the time I left the game on thinking it might recover (or finish what it was doing). 30000 is not the limit though I guess, depends on the amount of time I let galciv2 run while blocked
Reply #19 Top
Have you tried running the game at your desktop resolution of 1280x1024?
I have noticed you always seem to run it at 1024x768, and some video cards work better if you keep them at the same resolution.
I'm embarrassed - I dodn't notice the original post date was way back in April.

The only thing I can think of is that something is going wrong when it attempts to write from the buffer to the screen. When in v-synch mode, video cards set up at least one back buffer in addition to the memory being displayed on the screen, depending on how many buffers you specify. The theory is that when you activate v-synch, you are synching to the refresh rate of the monitor, which is *usually* slower than the video card is capable of displaying. The video card then spends all that "wait" time setting up as many frames ahead as you specified, so when the time comes to display that frame, all the calcs and stuff are already done. It seems that something is preventing your video card from writing to the "screen" memory. Maybe turning off v-synch (if it's on) might make the problem disappear?

Have you updated your drivers since the problem first started occuring? I'm asking only because the drivers mentioned in the debug file are 9 months old - but more importantly, they are one generation behind the current ones (yours = version 5.xx, current = version 6.xx). I know it sounds like such a drag, but you know what Stardock is gonna say...

I know this thread is a little old, but I found myself experiencing the same error. I tried all of the tricks mentioned above and nothing worked, but in the end I did manage to fix it.

For me, what worked was unchecking Allow AI to use CPU-Intensive Algorithms on the Galaxy Setup screen.

The downside, of course, is that you have to start a new game to do this. It'd be nice if this was a toggle in the game options menu.

Hope this is helpful to anyone else who may read this thread.

I had this problem happen (1.4x). I have a mystery program that launches and shuts down in the matter of a few seconds, and am not able to figure out for sure what program is doing it. I think it's my netscape dial-up. It has caused problems with other games as well. I wonder if ppl experiencing this problem are having some other program try to run while the game is going on and causing the crash. I don't have the de-bug from that crash. I just cussed out nutscrape and re-loaded the game.

Hi everyone.
I have very similar story that started with hard boot crushes and "windows recovered from serious error" message in my very first try after I bought the game. Did some footwork, a few searches, tried most of recomendations. Currently updated to 1.4 the PC doesn't crush anymore: it freezes till I close the program via WTM. Here is a debug with "Error flipping back buffer to primary buffer" message. Help? Anyone? I expected a bit of entertainment but up to now, I purchased frustration.

Change the game resolution to match the resolution of your desktop.  If you still get that error, try unchecking Fullscreen from the options window so that you're running in a window (note, if the game resolution is the same as the desktop resolution, it will still appear fullscreen).

Thank you CariElf but that did not help either. However, I did manage finaly to get my game working

I got a new hard drive, clean installed XP and drivers only: than the game. The game works fine on any resolution I choose. It's a hustle to swap the drives just to play this game but hey, I guess Stardock has trouble dealing with "others", lol. Something about sharing same space?

It also would be quite a trouble to get it patched but it doesn't "bug" me all that much, hehehehe.
