Sony Vaio Laptop video problem

The game runs on the laptop screen but won't run at all when a Dell 20" monitor is connected to the laptop. The video is a NVidia GeoForce Go 7400 with Intel GMA 950. The cpu is a Centrino Duo. Any suggestions/help would be appreciated.

several clarifications: what do u mean by wont run at all? do you see any screen in particular? is there an error message? pls be specific. Also, where and how did you connect the dell monitor? and did you hit the function key for external display? did you set the display settings on your desktop for the second monitor?

Yes, it is a Sony SZ. When I run the program I get a black rectangle that covers about two thirds of the screen. There are no error messages. I connect the dell with the wideo port on the left side of the laptop and run it as the only screen. I've tried different screen resolutions without success. It does run as I mentioned before on the laptop screen alone.
