Lame attack! Zerg your friendly Space Neighbors

or how i cheese attack my way to victory!

Ok here is a quick write up on how i cheesed my way to victory!

I was terrans no stats or abilities adjusted, large universe, sparce planets, 5 AI on normal diff etc...

Round one built standard stuff as far as planet and sent flagship out looking for planets and sent colony ship another direction. was going to play a pretty standard game when i had a great idea. I quickly set my tax and production spending to max. i turn off social and military spending and max research. I start buying tile improvements for earth. My research goal? planetory invasion. as soon as i get it i switch to 50/50 military research and research on life support to extend my range. at this point i have located two of my near by enemies homeworlds. I rush attack with 2 troop ships carrying 1k troops each. seeing how i researched to 30 solidering and they have not i take their worlds with ease. (this is within first 20 rounds) Now my civ is getting angry at me for tax rate so i drop to 20% and make sure i'm making a little bit of cash while still building up and grabbing any good planets that i come across.

I have defeated the Yor in the very opening moments, i have a few guys that are still open to zerg attack so i build up toward that. Iconia came pre equipped with lots of happy people to turn into mindless killing machines, so with earth i now have two troopship factory's. I max my approval to gert more population. Then switch to max military production / tax crank out 4 troop ships and then take out two more home worlds. This time its the Drengin who happy give me the rest of their worlds (2 class 7 planets) The altarian republic homeworld falls but they hang on with their one colonized class 4 planet as if they could win! So again people getting unhappy switch back to max happy mode with bread and circuses for the plebes.

At this point i believe there is maybe 7 really good planets in the whole galaxy (class 10+) i control 3 of them from my zerg attacks. At this point i think the AI is getting wise and starts to leave scout ships parked on planets. So i research to make
a basic fighter with max engines so i can speed ahead of my transports destroy defenses and stop anything that that might get to my troop transports.

I look around and i notice that the remaining two civilazations are out of range for my zerg attack but one of them has a planet just on the edge of my range so even if it is a crappy level 4 i invade it after taking out the scout ship parked on it. Now the Arceans homeworld is within range.. but seeing how it took me forever to get out this far they have 10b in pop and a few troop transports guarding the homeworld! so i send all my troop transports to the world i just grabbed and send my one lonely fighter to wait outside. Now the arceans must have seen this coming and now have a fighter that has 2 beam and no defense. So much the invasion plans. i buy another fighter at the nearest world and move it into fleet. Ok its on!

But again an idea strikes me, the whole time i have been building up the computer has been building up. I remove all my ships parked on the captured Arceaning planet, and of course the AI launches a fleet. leaving only 2B on their homeworld and 1 defender. I wait till the Arcean fleet gets a tiny bit away and then attack the planet with my tiny 2 ship fleet with lazer p shooters. i kill off the defener but one is serious screwed up. Also by this time my fast attack troop ships are passing the troop ships + 1 defender that the computer sent out to grab my world. So it turns into a race to get back to their homeworld. but i have been using all my meger research points to get faster engines, so with a grin on my face my invasion forces warp over and take their home with two turns until their fleet gets back. So i go into debt to purchase another fighter to insure the fighter they have with them does not knock out my defense. Which is composed of a fighter that has 2/6 health and another 6/6 both with one point of beam offense. i get the third one right when they show up. i launch fleet them and attack!

Needless to say the Arceans are now stuck on a class 5 planet and i dont have to worry about them as my culture or should i say theirs will soon bring them into the fold!

the only ones left the hated Torians but they are way in the corner! so i switch back to normal mode and grind them into dust after sending my remaining troop transports to mop up the altarian's on their rock of a planet.

So after this game i learned a few new tricks:

Tricking the AI into dropping their pants to spank them is quite enjoyable!

Rushing the AI is fun, but leaves me with the want to crank up the level as it may just be that i'm playing against normal level.
So i will test this fun strat again and if it works it looks like its time to up the AI another level to see how far i can go with this zerg attack!

Try that on obscene or higher difficulty and tell me you had success.

That is a very good tactic on that type of map. Once you get more planets, it isn't as viable of a strategy though.

Its hardly a surprise that this worked. I tend to do the same thing from time, especially if I am near a civ at the start which is likely to be hostile to me.

The AI pretty much has to be generalized, it does not alter its initial buildup methods too much with respect to planet availability or galaxy size. (I concede I could be very much wrong here, its not like I wrote any of this AI). The AI starts out trying to colonize as many nearby planets as it can. If you take out its home world with a rushed invasion, you can pretty much take them right out of the game at the start.

If you try this on a larger galaxy though, you will probably only manage to take out one of your neighbors. While your screaming along towards invasion tech, the other AI's are going for diplomacy and trade, and will end up trading tech among themselves as they always do. Assuming you manage to stay out of any wars after your initial blood soaked expansion, you are in a pretty powerful position, however.

If the AI put more effort into engines / sensors, I do not think this would be a viable approach. All it would take to foil this sort of invasion is a minor military starbase, and maybe 2 fighters with impulse engines. If your initial strike is repelled, your boned.

Cheese is playing the AI at less than intelligent and bragging about it.

without going that high
it could be interesting to see if the thread starter is that successfull with intelligent difficulty

Greetings,

I wonder how many here were (or are still) Starcraft broodwar players. Zergs were my favorite race but I loved those templars.

if you were playing (especially against humans), I can tell you I was the first ever to get reaver dropped by Zileas. And I was the one who was the first to use 1 draggoon, 1 zealot and 1templars drop.

Nice moments to remember. Just too bad no other game gave me the pleasure I had with starcraft. Not even Galciv2... (Sorry Stardust...hehehe)

Thank you

"bread and circuses for the plebes. "

You're a hell of a harsh dictator with more moodswings than Adolf Hitler on Zoloft

Feast one day, famine the next. Perhaps the AI should adjust 'rebellion' statistics accordingly

well guys i havent had time to get around to cranking up the AI, as i have been busy busy for last few days but i am going to as i am feeling pretty comfy on normal level now.

so i will report back once i get another game in

also i'm not really bragging just thought i would post a tatic i came across see if anyone else was doing things similar.
i tried playing normally on harder levels and all i get is the computer owning me so i'm ramping up difficulty slowly
