Abandon starbase or colony?

Is there any way to abandon a starbase or a colony? If not, is there some way to NOT accept a colony defecting to me? In some games this is a real pain, and I would like to at the least not be required to accept a defection.

Any thoughts or info would be appreciated.

Ok, someday, maybe in another life, I'm going to learn to keep it simple! Many thanks.

Pretty sure there's a way to "abandon colony" in, I think, the summary screen. Not sure why anyone would do it though, since the computer would probably send out a colony ship almost instantly anyway.

I've never sold or traded any of my planets, but whenever I try to ask for a computer's planet, they seem to value them very highly. Could be worth a decent amount of credits or tech to an AI if you want to give it away.

if you do like blucher said and click abandon colony, it abandons it but also reduces planet quality significantly if i remember correct. like a salt the earth kind of deal.

It reduces quality to the base, before you colonised it and any race/technology bonuses were applied.

On really large maps I sometimes abandon very small colonies (3, maybe 4) so that I enver have to deal with them.

I never abandon anything, what is the point? You just lose resources.

Queue up stock exchanges on all tiles of that colony and forget about it. It'll sit there and make money for you.

If the Drengin are kicking your butt and you know you're going to lose there is a certain amount of satisfaction in destroying all your colonies before they defeat you.

If you are losing a war, sometimes it's better to scrap a colony rather then hae it taken, since it will reduce the enemies "snowball" effect. Rebuilding from scratch is a better option (sometimes) then reconquering a fully developed world.

Well, this will sound strange but I'm actually trying to avoid winning. I really like to play way up the tech tree, defending as needed to get there, then have big epic wars, win or lose, with high end ships on both sides. The problem is that to keep the bloody A.I. from taking me over, even with victory set to only conquest, I have to build enough influence tech, and where I can, take influence resources or they get used against me. BUT, when I do that then I will sometimes start to have my own snowball problem, where influence starts to get me planets, then those extend influence even more, etc. SO, I figured I'd just trash the new planets but leave them open to an A.I. player, assuming I'm ahead, which is the only time this happens.

I looked at summary before I started this thread, and didn't see it, but all look again tonight after The Soprano's.

What I'd really like is to find out how to mod the take over effect of influence out of the game, or just make it so the A.I. players can't be taken over while leaving me vunerable, if it's a balance issue. But to be honest I just haven't had the gumption to go figure it out.

If you let the AI take a PQ 4 Planet, it will steal one of your techs....if you have any that it does not have.

If yu like high end wars, you could se t it to battle of the gods.

Pardon my ignorance but I haven't seen any mention of battle of the gods, could someone enlighten me? (OK, that's a lost cause so just fill me in on this please. :} )

There's a drop down list on the rop right of the new game window. If you select the "Battle of the Gods" scenario, every civilization starts with all the techs.

Thanks. Thing is I like the long game process, it's just a pain when I'm winning to have the A.I. just collapse like that from influence. Last night I played for hours just giving them the colonies back, made me REAL popular but got old, so I just startted deleteing them, but the area around me is now starting to look like a wasteland.

Next game I'm going to ttry to survive without the influence tree, or at least survive longer, and see if that helps. (Assuming I'm winning which for me still takes a good bit of luck. )

If that doesn't work I suppose I'll have to see if I can mod the other races into being harder to take over, though I'll bet that would screw up some of the A.I.'s balance as it couldn't take over the other A.I. players either. As I think my way through it on this thread I guess ideal would be something that simply made my influence not effect them, while giving me the protection I earn with each of the influence techs. Sort of an isolationist dream land, that would never work in the real world but hey, it's a game.

I also wanted to say thanks for all the replies on this, the game has a great communtiy here!

I'm currently playing my first BOG game on normal, gigantic map, 9 races. There are just the Torians, Arceans & the Drath left and me.

All the races that surrendered did so to the Drath which has given them incredible influence for the map and flipped a class 19 planet of mine that was just coming online production and economically. So I go storming in and retake it from them only to have it flip back to them 2 turns later. (takes a lot time and cash to get a planet going in BOG)

So I get bent out shape over it and retake it and four nearby Drath planets only to have them all flip back within 5 turns so I implemented the Russian scorched earth policy and destroy every planet I take from them keeping one Battleship in the area to take out colony ships.

This has proven very effective in reducing the Drath influence, plus I don't have maintenance fees for colony's that will take a long time to start producing.

BTW that class 19 planet is now a class ONE and I still will not let the Drath have it.

The game I was talking about I had at Painful, above that I tend to get into trouble in the early game. Though I'm working on another Crippling now, and getting my booty booted to boot. :}

On normal I couldn't seem to keep from influence just taking over the game, provided I got a good start. (I always have trouble with the early moves, it seems like I take too long and all the good spots get scarfed, once I'm past that I can handle it pretty well.)

Edit: I was thinking, in Civ III when a city wanted to defect it would ask me if I would accept them, I wonder why that wouldn't work here?
