I have no problem with any of the AI races with the exception of the Altarans.... Their incredable influence bonus kinda ruins most games they're in (I usually pick random races, just for spice)... Ususally the only way to counter their effect is to give large quantities of cash to whatever evil race is closest to them, and in the beginning cash is the one thing I usually don't have...

The "good" Altarians that always start wars of annihilation and conquest and the Torians that have a tendency, in my games, to backstab me.

Iconians. What a thorn in my side. Half the galaxy cowers before them. I know their secret though- they wait until they max out planetary assault vehicles and send them all out in 1 turn to conquer the galaxy. The best tactic to defeat them is to send out the largest ship you have available and equip it with max defenses and the fastest engines to explore the galaxy and eliminate the fog of war. Once you've done that you'll have ample time to eliminate their ships befor they reach your homeworld. It should also give you extra time to upgrade and by stronger ships before their fleet arrives.
