Too frequent crashes - unplayable

Hi, this is really frustrating. The game looks awesome and I'm practically addicted already, but I can't play very long. It crashes, at times every turn. I've spent the last 2 hours trying to get a single turn to run, but I just can't take it anymore. Pleeeease help me fix this. I've got windows 2000 on a 2.2ghz 684meg dell dimension with an intel 82845 graphics adapter, with the latest drivers (2005). It crashes at all different spots, often during auto-save (or manual save) although at least half the time its seemingly random. I upgraded my retail copy to 1.0X and then, when the crashes persisted, even tried beta 4 which I have now, and its definately not any better. Can anyone help? I want to play this game! Thanks.

First are those drivers early or late 2005? Stardock recommends having drivers new within last 6 months. Beyond that getting the SmartException program and posting the top of your debug.err file will help figure out what might be causing your issue.

The new beta can be bad. the one before was great. so if you can still get it, try that.

Did you get your drivers through Dell or Intel?

I updated my drivers and upgraded to v1.0x.2, since then it only crashes rarely when i click on the victory icon, which i don't do any more because it really does'nt give an accurate measure that i am going to win anyway

It crashes when you click on the victory icon?! How weird   If you ever get a spare moment, Meglobob, could you install smartException and try to catch that crash? I'm sure others have the same issue, so stomping it out would be great (and you could revisit that screen again )

Thanks!

Ok sorry for the noob questions here. I updated "back" to 1.0X.010 since I couldn't see how to go to beta3 as suggested (is there a way?). I also found and installed SmartException. Then I tried running the game. It crashed as soon as I clicked "load" from my saved games list. I'm guessing that might be because my saved game was in the beta4 version so I'm going to start another and try it all again. But SmartException didn't log the crash anywhere. I read the README.TXT and it says the application should be in SmartExceptions "configured list." I couldn't find any file that looks like an application list nor a way to enter one in the SE console (which was running in the tray when GC2 crashed). Am I doing something wrong? Thanks.

Oh one more answer, my driver is from intel, its the latest according to their site, June 2005.

SE should catch any crashes that happen while it is running without you having to do anything; just open up explorer and do a search on your machine for files named *.CRA, and there should be one there for GC2.

Beta 4 has nothing new except for fixing a rather large bug that meant every time you tried to trade a ship, it CTD'd the game. And other bug fixes. Beta 4 is the most stable, and no 3a has been removed from SDC unless you archived it (but I really would recommend against it)

As kyro said, .CRA files show the line of text it crashed on.
