latest beta bugs

when on planet screen or research screen the turn button will often disappear, if i hit done my turn will end. if the turn button is visible and i hit done while in those screens everything is ok. also noticed while i was at war with the terrans that their starports were idle not sure what their bc situation was but it seems to me that they should be cranking out ships for defense or offense. i have to think their bc situation was ok because usually a civ will ask for peace when they are low on money. all of this was on a normal game, large map, 6 random civs, no tech trade.

didn't get to even hit end turn before running into these.

I play a custom race, but have not decided on a ship set yet. When I started this game, I chose a new set (alterians). before starting I deleted all the old files in the ships folder (Yor ship-set designs). I did want to keep my ship names (one of the reasons I deleted the old files).

First turn, I design a new ship using the old name (VSS New Horizons) and I get the message in the shipbuilder if I want to replace the existing design. Um, I deleted those files. Why are they saved somewhere else in the game too? Is the game looking for ship files in the recycle bin? And just how DO you delete a design permanently?

Sigh, but there more. After saving the new design (selected yes to replace old design). I exited the ship builder and tried to add the new ship to the military build queue. It would not allow me to build the ship. I could place an order for any of the 3 core designs, but it ignored the action when I clicked on the new design.

I alt tabbed out of the game and checked the ships folder. It's still empty, so it would seem no new files were created when I confirmed the new design.

I am not sure whats going on with the last one. As you can see, SDC shows I have the current beta build installed, but when I use the desktop icon to launch the game it shows the previous beta version. On the main menu in game, it also shows v1.1 BETA-3A.

First off - a really minor problem with the latest beta - the fleet icon seems to have problems - most of the time it shows a normal ship icon for a fleet - and occaisionally it would show a fleet icon for a normal ship - though it wouldn't stay that way for many turns...

Secondly - I had it CTD on me a few minutes ago - I was nearing the end of a game I was playing with the old version, and it loaded fine - but something just happened in it when I had just finished invading a planet... (Dosen't seem to say much though).

Here's the debug.err - (edited for space). I could send the full one - but where to?:

hmmm, is that the most current video driver you have available?
no - but it's the best one I've tested for the particular video card I have, with the games I play... (9800Pro) - and I'm pretty sure it's not the problem here...

It's probably moot until I get the correct BETA running, but I investigated a little bit more on the ships problem.

I can't add the ship if I access the ship list from the main screen. I can add it if i access the ship list from the planet view screen. I initially tried to access the ship list from the main map and was able to add the scout, I reaccessed the list from the main screen and tried to buy one outright from there, hoping to force the build queue to the correct one, but that did not work. I ended up rush-buying the scout. (I did not hit end turn at that point, I hoped a restart would fix it).

When I loaded the game this time, I did get the queue to show the right choice by placing it from the planet view screen (main map access still not working). I hit end turn (the correct design was only half paid for as it's more expensive than a core scout) but I ended up with the scout anyway.

Next turn, with the correct ship in the queue, I rushed that one. This time I got the right ship when I ended the turn. So I exited the game and checked the ship folder to see if it created the new file(s). to my shock and horror (ok, not that bad) the game had re-created SHIPCFG files for every single ship I have ever designed playing the game (36 files total recreated in the ships folder).

I am going to try and re-install to the current beta with sdc. First attempt went no where. I'm going to try and roll it back to a previous version and then upgrade it again I guess. maybe I should email support first. I don't want to destroy info they might need for dxing.

Save the info in a file for later.

I get the same problem when I create a desgin with the same name as a design that I have deleted, it asks me if I want to make a design with a name that already exists. Strangely, the first ship I build with that name on *every* planet builds the old ship. Once * one * of that ship has been built, I can change the currently "building" ship in every shipyard to the new one, but I cannot avoid building the first ship with that name as the "old" one.

I suppose I could try building something else quick first, before I assign any shipyards to the new design, but I shouldn't have to.

Um, I deleted those files. Why are they saved somewhere else in the game too?

If you play a metaverse game, those ships are saved in the My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2\Metaverse\ships folder so that if you have mods enabled when you are playing a standard game, the ships that you design then won't show up as empty hulls in the metaverse game.

Thanks Cari. That folder has even more junk designs in it than the other one. It was one of the few places I hadn't looked, as most of the designs were not made in a metaverse game.

I do not use mods, and now that I am past the "learning games" any I play will be metaverse games. Can I clear out that folder and get rid of the old designs, or would that cause other problems?

Yes, you can just clear out your ships folder to start fresh.

Uh-oh - that was a bug in Beta 1 that had disappeared in betas 2&3.

Hope it hasn't found it's way back in to 4...

Nope. I got that line in my debug all the time in beta 3. I counted 18 times in one play session a few days ago.

Yeah - but it didn't cause a CTD in Beta 2 or 3 because they cleaned up the code that ran when it happened.
Hopefully it is just a coincidence in this case that a CTD happened straight after it, and that it is in fact down to the old video drivers

UPDATES:

I went back and played the game again - (started a new game from scratch this time, rather than load in a pre-beta 4 one) - and it fixed the ship icon problem - but this time it crashed pretty early on - but there didn't seem to be any reason for it at all in the debug file - except for one line:

Debug Message: No files found matching mask C:\Documents and Settings\Me\My Documents\My Games\GalCiv2\Mods\s*_UD_*.shipcfg

Which was present in the one above too, except that it appeared near the end of the file this time - (since it was very short).

Because of that - I decided to clear out the ships I had stored form my previous game - and voila! I've played a game since then and had no problems whatsoever... (And it's not because I was using Kyro's hull mod either - so I know that wasn't it) - it just seems that there's some problems with some user-created ships from the previous version in this one...
