Star Gates... or whatever they were called.

Not sure where exactly this should be.

Ok so the story is that those star gate things were how the other Civs got around certain points in the galaxy until the Terrans came up with hyperdrive. I would like to be able to build these gates. On smaller maps, they wouldn't really be useful but on the really big maps it could mean the difference of a month or two of travel time for a fleet to reach it's destination, which could make all the difference in a war. Could build it like a space station, and have a maximum number that can be built, depending upon logistics. Start with being able to build 2, then at 30 logistics you can build 3, then 4 at 40, and finally 5 at 50 logistics. If a fleet enters a gateway a popup comes up showing the list of gateways. The player picks a destination and poof, the fleet appears at its destination gateway ready to go on the next turn.

Thoughts?

Random wormholes that work the same way, minus the option to build them, could be good too. Or just stargates that are randomly placed on the map when the game starts, whether you can build more or not. "Birth of the Federation" had a few good elements that Stardock should really consider... being inspired by.

If you read the description, stargates took LONGER than hyperdrive.

That's the justification for leaving them out, hyperdrive is superior to stargate technology so all the old stargates were scrapped. This is not to say that an expansion couldn't reintroduce the concept as advanced technology might improve the basic design.

Yeah. A better stargate designed when you reach Warp IV or something. I can see it now. Ships with 1 move point entering a gate, pase some money, like 200bc, and in a few turns it arives at another gate in a quater of the time.

I think the reason they srapped the stargates and the reason they said it takes longer is for 2 reasons. 1) because with a stargate you have to have a point a and a point b. Otherwise it doesn't work. Like with SG-1. Assuming that thats how these stargates work. Examle w/ startgate (note the example i am giving is a gross exaggreion) I wan to see my family in Asgard and in Caprica (lets say these 2 suns are close to each other) However there is only a stargate that goes to Asgard and its a 2 day flight from asgard to Caprica. However with hyper drive it makes the trip far far shorter. See what I am getting at?

Anther reason it that it probably takes along time to build a stargate. Alot of time and work, but with hyperdrive you don't have to worry about the hassle of maintaining the gate itself and the like.

I am all for stargates. Hell it'll help move huge fleets accross the galaxy. Those were gust u ideas that I thought of for the reason that they closed down the stargates. I wonder if anyone else agress?
