I feel that space combat has been simplified too much. A lot of valid options that should be present are not, and it is hurting my enjoyment of the game.
For example, I would like the option to choose targets for my ships. That wat I can target the ships my weapons will be most effective against, or concentrate fire on a single vessel (of my choosing). No use firing a 4-laser ship at a 8-shields ship when there is a much more vulnerable ship in the fleet; I'll let the 8-missiles ship handle the shielded ship.
Another thing I miss is withdrawing from combat; if a battle is not going my way, or my tactical goals have been achieved (ie the destruction of a certain ship), I want the rest of my ships to be able to flee. Of course it would also be nice to have something to prevent this (an interdictor-module for instance).
I realize this is quite a big addition to the game, but it would really increase the gameplay from my point of view. Combat is too simplistic now, too all-or-nothing; I want heroic last stands, pyrrhic victories, hit-and-run attacks, tactical goals.
Is anything like this considered for adding to galciv2 ? It would transform a good game into a great game in my view.
