How do I edit the shape/cosmetics/view of my ships?

Ive been playing for some time now but never could figure out the whole editing of the ships things. I see all the mods you can add but mostly they are all addon thingamajigs, not actually ship forms and shapes. And then when I select one and click "Place", nothing happens as the Place button is grayed out, so really Im at a loss, if someone could please explain how this works that would be appreciated, thanks.

There is a video tutorial on designing ships in the game tutorials screen. That may answer a lot of your questions.

The "Place" button is greyed out/disabled for the "Extras" parts, because they could go anywhere on the ship.
It is activated when you select functional components like engines, weapons, etc. These can be automatically placed on a ship using the place button or double-clicking the component in the list.

If you do not have a lot of engines or weapons in your list, it means you need to research the technologies required to unlock them.
