SDC is gonna cause you problems

As you say in your post, Brad, don't download a beta unless you know the risks involved. Unfortunately, SDC defaults to revealing Alpha and Beta builds, and therefore anyone loading SDC is offered a beta update which they probably won't know is a beta update.

If you want to reduce the problem reports I'd make that option default to OFF.

Are you sure about that? I was under the impression that it did not. It probably will if you reinstall it over an existing build that has betas enabled.

It does. It's not a problem to me, I like betas, but it was odd that the default on first installation is alphas/betas on

I was also automatically shown and suggested to download the Beta, which I did not mind, but might throw someone for a loop.

just because it is there and enabled doesnt mean you have to upgrade.

(comparison is a cliff on a holodeck in star trek with the safety protocols turn off, you dont need to jump)

It does. Friend of mine installed Stardock Central and GalCiv2 last night, I told him to upgrade, but I didn't look closely at the version number before he did it, so he got the beta. I agree that by default Stardock Central should install with that "show beta" checkbox off.

I think we all understand the value of default values that reflect the needs of most gamers, and particularly those who are not computer savy.

Offering a pop-up to all users asking to "update" to a Beta build is probably not the best way to go about this.

I know the risks involved , but anyways I've had my SDC that way for years now. I pre-ordered and had the very first beta.

Highly encourage people to pre-order and get in on a public beta test. It's a blast.

I admit that I like the option to load the beta and install it... If it screws something up I can reinstall, no biggie...
But on the other hand if should be default that betas do not show up, as some newbe will undoubtably complain about downloading a beta instead of an official patch...

Yep, SDC defaults to beta on. Odd that archiving doesn't default to on to allow people to roll back.
