embarassing question

Hey Guys. I have been busy learning to play the game, I skimmed through the manual and watched the tutorials. I cannot figure out how to declare war (on any civ)??? When i goto the treaty/ Trade window for foreign affairs--I dont see an option to declare war, other than the attack a civ option (as in promise to attack another civ in exchange for something). Please pardon my ignorance--but how do you declare war??

I'd love to know that answer to this one too. I'm always afraid to attack without a proper casus belli and DoW first. I don't want my reputation and alignment to take a hit...

You cant declare war diplomaticaly, you just start firing. On the plus side, I dont think this hurts alignment.

just find a ship with you want to be at war with and send another ship there it will say attacking so and so's ship will result in war do you want to? and you hit yes and away you go, no alignment hit or anything, its just how it works. actually a nice tactic is invading undefended planets in the same turn to declate war, but on higher dificulty the ai will notice what you're doing and might say move those transports or we will attack, and then they might declare war on you first.

Only hurts reputation when you stab someone in the back. The best thing you can do is get nice and armed, send some armed scouts out, hold a trade embargo, and they will get the idea. They'll probably attack you first, aswell.

But since when has war been diplomatic? Alright, napoleonic wars everyone lined up on the battlefield, got ready, then started fighting at the agreed time "Righto, that's a cannon going off, it's 11 o clock, may the skirmish begin", but even then war was declared by invading someone, or premempting someone.

OK, thanks--I wasnt sure, The AI usually sends me a message, and I thaught I could do likewise.

And the corollary to the above question: if the AI can tell you to move ships or face war, how do you go ahead and do the same?

You can't. However, often they are merely using your territory as a shortcut to get to someone else. Low espionage tells you this. If it confirms they're going for you, get your fleet mobilised quickly

if you play with intelligent AI, just move some heavy ship near their planet and hell will break loose before you attack anyone

Not really fair that the AI can tell you to move your transports or stop building influence starbases, but the player can't.

You can declare war diplomatically. Just tell someone else who you're going to be attacking -- preferably someone who's not exactly on friendly terms with your target. It's a pretty useful way to buy alliances or just plain better relations.

I really should do that... I mean if im going to war might as well get a little bonus relation by claiming its to help, so and so, out.
